| burbsthing's Full Review: Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome |
The Twin Cities are fraternal rather than identical twins. If this stadium had been placed in the good looking and charismatic twin of St. Paul maybe it would have been done better. Unfortunately it was built in Minneapolis and took on the characteristics of the more mundane sibling. As you approach the Metrodome it appears to be more of a convention center than a sports stadium. Why not ugly from the outside you don't get the energetic feeling that most sports stadiums exude. Inside it gets worse.
Upon entering the stadium you see why the Twins are so eager to leave and why the fans are so apprehensive about going. Walking into the concourse is like entering a dark medieval dungeon. Equally eerie is the lack of color, drab Stalinist architecture has nothing on this. Leaving the concourse toward the seating area the first thing that strikes you is the emptiness, each spectator could have a row to his or herself, great for loners or existentialists, but not great for experiencing the atmosphere of a Major League baseball game.
I've been in other domed stadia that didn't have these aesthetic drawbacks so domes can be hospitable, which is good to avoid the weather the Twin Cities experience frequently for April, May, and September games. It is easy to get to and the concessions are good. But these are no reasons to go. I'd recommend going to residents of the Twin Cities since it is their chance to see a big league game. If you visit the Twin Cities don't go for any reason other than to add another park to your attendance list.
