| jzak's Full Review: Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome |
John Casey, the Minnesota Twins announcer belts this line out before he announces the game's starting lineups. Whenever I'm at a Twins game, I always look around at peoples' reactions and I think "do they really want to be INSIDE on a day like this?" I sure don't! For all of its supposed "advantages" up in the frozen tundra of Minnesota, I would like to be taken OUT to the ballgame during the summertime.
When you walk into the Dome, it feels like someone has turned the air conditioning on to maximum. If the temperature outside is a balmy 85 degrees, rest assured that the Dome will be about 50. It's so chilly that fans actually bring sweatshirts and blankets to the game! The seats are blue plastic and are very uncomfortable to the average person. The sight lines are relatively clear, except if you are seated near the gigantic jumbotron or a steel beam.
The astroturf makes baseballs bounce about 40 feet in the air and the lights on the white roof may actually blind you. Imagine how the outfielders feel when they shag fly balls! If you are looking for a cozy, wonderful ballpark with history and character the Dome will not provide you any enjoyment. But it the noise generated within it has given the Twins' World Series teams the ultimate "Dome Field Advantage." Too bad the Twins haven't been good enough to fill any more than 10,000 people a game.
Sure, sometimes there are cold, rainy days in Minnesota during the summer. The Metrodome NEVER gets rained out. But sports were meant to be played outdoors, especially baseball. The Metrodome is quite possibly the LEAST liked facility in Minnesota because of this. The Twins and Vikings owners have lobbied the Minnesota State Legislature demanding a new home for the Twins in the guise of maintaining their teams' profitability in a small sports market. The facility is not liked by anyone, and it's constantly being used as a bargaining chip for people who want an outdoor stadium.
I'd support a new stadium, but the owners of both teams want the taxpayers of Minnesota to foot the bill. I'm not prepared to do that and I know that the majority of Minnesotans aren't either. Even if it means losing professional sports teams to other cities. Minnesota sports fans tend to attend Twins games when the team is doing well, and stay home when they are not. So, I guess old John Casey will still yell his chilly forecast over the Metrodome speakers. In the meantime, I'll be clutching my blanket watching Twins baseball in the Humphrey Dome. Want some coffee?
