The fans of the Minnesota Vikings deserve to see their team in a better stadium. Granted, I don't live in Minnesota anymore, so I have absolutely no say in the matter. (As for all the Twins fans, yes, all four of you...nevermind.)
The Metrodome has passed its prime, outlived its heyday, and is nearly obsolete. (Not too much unlike the RCA dome in Indy.) The seating capacity is adequate, but no longer up to "Super Bowl" standards. So much for hosting the big game. As far as other financial arguments, check out www.vikings.com for other facts and tidbits about what can/should be done.
From the fans' perspective, the Metrodome isn't really anything special. Nice location, great city, expensive parking. (Not to mention a bitter-cold walk from your car to the dome...) Consessions are adequate though a bit expensive (you expect that). Bathrooms have seen their better days. You wouldn't mind a little bit of a mess if the place had some character. But it doesn't. It's a huge billboard, which happens to host sporting events (and monster truck shows, which are NOT sporting events).
I have one major complaint, and that is the concourse is not wide enough to ahndle the traffic of a sold-out game. There are ALWAYS traffic jams inside the building, especially where the vendors sell merchandise. There's no room for the thousands of people milling about, trying to get to their seats! I missed the kickoff of a game and a couple of minutes of the first quarter just trying to get to my seat (I had arrived in PLENTY of time).
I just hope someone wises up and gets a deal done to get the Vikes a real good stadium with character.
