| lincolnlogger's Full Review: Kauffman Stadium |
Ah, Kansas City. Epicenter of the beef world, home of great steaks, good BBQ sauce, and Royals baseball. Kauffman Stadium is the gem that houses the latter, in my opinion one of the most underrated stadiums in the league.
When I lived in Omaha, I had the opportunity to drive down to Kansas City quite a bit, and enjoy what the city had to offer. I was really impressed by Kauffman stadium for several reasons. It was a good, clean and family oriented atmosphere- the way baseball was meant to be. The fans were great, the stadium was well-kept, and it was a pleasant experience. Now for the breakdown:
THE STADIUM
I like the overall layout of the stadium, nice and open-aired. The area behind center field is wonderful with the grass and the crown-shaped scoreboard. The water jets are a nice touch, and are especially good for nightgames when they are lit up. It would be nice to have more outfield seats, with the bullpens tucked away underneath. To me, bullpens like those in KC and at Comiskey in Chicago are just a waste of space that certainly should have been used for additional outfield seats. Otherwise, I have no complaints. Kauffman is a nicely designed, well-kept stadium. I loved the scoreboard. Being a stats guy, they gave me all the info I every wanted and more!
THE FANS/ATMOSPHERE
While there are numerous advertisements, they are not overwhelming or completely distracting. The fans are typical Midwestern fare (read "good"), and often include numerous families and children. While it is sometimes hard to cheer for a mediocre team, the fans get behind their team at the appropriate times.
GETTING THERE
Drive, baby drive! There is more than ample parking, as the lot is meant to house both Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium next door (though hopefully not at the same time!). Parking was $6 last time I went, which is rather reasonable. The stadium is also situated right next to I-70, which makes it easy to get out of (though there was quite a line to get into the place.)
CONCESSIONS
Not bad prices. If my memory serves me correctly, the sodas were reasonable ($3) as were the nachos ($4). I don't remember all the items they had, but I do remember that there was a wide selection of eats.
OVERVIEW
Kauffman Stadium is a wonderful ballpark, one that is an enjoyable setting for an afternoon/evening of family fun. Take 'em out to a ball game here, you won't regret it.
