| gjacks's Full Review: Kyle Field |
Kyle Field at Texas A&M University is one of the great football atmospheres in the country. I guess the fans cause the atmosphere, but I guarantee that if you have ever attended a game there, you will never forget it.
I was very fortunate to have attended quite a few games in College Station due to pulling some strings in the old South West Conference before it folded. I have been to 5 Texas A&M / UT games and walked the sidelines during the games. This makes the trip much more rewarding.
I was only about 11 years old the first time I went to a game at Kyle Field. I got to stand on the sidelines and was completely awestruck at the number of people that could fit into, what seems like, a small stadium. This particular game was one of the biggest of the year, so they a few thousand extra tickets and set up folding chairs about 6 rows deep on the track all around the field.
Anyway, about the facility…the stadium holds around 70,000 fans when the seats around the track are not used (I think there were around 77,000 the first night I was there which was a record crowd at the time).
There is a great amount of tradition that surrounds this stadium. Here are a few of the traditions that surround Kyle Field and Texas A&M University athletics:
1. The history of the 12th man is there and well documented. Please check out the website that is linked from epinions.com to read about the history of the 12th man.
2. The entire student body to stands up for the whole game.
3. Every time Texas A&M scores, you get to kiss your date for the game.
4. The newest mascot is Reveille VI. Reveille VI is the sixth mascot with this name at Texas A&M University. All have been collies. Reveille VI was inducted as the new mascot in November of 1993. I was actually on the sideline at this game and was able to see the newest mascot up close and personal. All of the former mascots are buried outside the stadium facing the scoreboard so they can see the score for evermore.
This is just a small part of what Kyle Field is about. I hope if you ever get the chance to visit there, you will take the opportunity. It will be a trip you will never forget (unless you are for the other team and they get beat, which happens quite often at Kyle Field).
