What can I say? As a native New Yorker and die hard Rangers Fan, I go there quite often. I have been to numerous concerts, shows and even the circus there. For concerts and events like the circus, you'll want to buy good seats, so as not to be behind lighting rigs and such other items that may block your view. This review is geared mainly toward HOCKEY GAMES!
As far as sports go, in my opinion, there are really no bad seats. Even if you are all the way at the top, you can see all the action. For hockey games, There are five price levels for seats, and they are separated by color. The most expensive being red, then orange, then yellow, then green, and finally blue. Prices range from red seat being about $150 down to blue seats being around $30. A night at the garden can become a bit costly, as food and drink are quite pricey, especially if you go with children, but it well worth every penny. There are four ATM's located throughout the Garden.
There is a double team store right within the Garden, located at Gate 66, to buy team merchandise, and memorabilia, and the like. There are also team stores at Gate 60 & 75. The items here are also quite costly, so you may want to wait and buy them elsewhere. I have personally purchased jerseys and such there. I bought a Henrik Lunqvist replica jersey for over two hundred, but a child's Mike Richter Jersey only cost me $85. (He is retired now, but that was just an estimate of jersey prices that I paid. I have also purchased smaller items, like a stuffed Rangers Pig ($15) and a Rangers Pin ($5).
There is the All Star Bar at Gate 60, The End Court Bar between Gates 63 & 64, and the Food Courts at Gates 61, 65, 71 & 76. There are also multiple concession stands. The lines can be long, but once you get the hang of things, you'll know exactly when to leave your seat to avoid them.
The Rangers also offer a deal (on certain games) called the Blue Plate Special, which offers meal certificates (worth 12.50) with the purchase of two tickets. They also offer partial packages of multiple games for those who can't get season tickets. The seats are slightly cheaper per seat this way, but the packages are pricey since they include tickets for multiple games.(more information can be found at www.nyrangers.com)
They also offer a program called the Junior Rangers All S.T.A.R club. This club is FREE to join. It is for children under the age of 17. They send offers for discounts on merchandise, and special offers and contests. Your child will even receive a birthday card from the Rangers. They have special programs and benefits for children that play hockey, as well as for their coaches and teams. (more information can be found at www.nyrangers.com). My daughter, and all six of my nieces and nephews are enrolled as Junior Rangers. It great when they get new stickers or a birthday card to see their faces light up to know that their favorite players remembered their birthdays º
The fans are loyal and mostly friendly. Garden employees have always been friendly and helpful to me. I have never had a bad time at a game.
There are five men's restrooms and five women's restrooms throughout the Garden, and they are well-maintained and clean considering the amount of people that go through them in a night. There are also multiple water fountains and pay telephones.
Madison Square is easily accessible by all subways that go to 34th street / Penn Station, as well as the LIRR to Penn Station. Parking is a bit tough unless you want to pay for it, so I recommend mass transit.
Only other thing is the longs concession and bathroom lines, but that happens everywhere. I suggest waiting for a lull in the game, and go during a period, don't wait for intermission. Or leave right before intermission to be among the first in line.
As with all arenas, there are prohibited items and they generally include: weapons, laser pens, outside food and beverage, cans, bottles, alcohol, drugs, video cameras, digital cameras, and cameras with telephoto or zoom lenses.
It would be best not to bring these items with you.
In my opinion, it is worth every penny for the night out. I suggest (for adults) if you plan to drink, pick a place to meet up before or after the game, so as to limit the $6.00 beer (Bud, Bud Light, Coors Light) consumption at the game. You should make sure to have identification, even if you look your age, they card either way. Trust me on this one. Also, you may want to feed the kids before leaving home, food is pricey as well.
My opinion...GO TO THE GARDEN...LET'S GO RANGERS!!!! Have a good time!
