Great On-Campus Stadium

Written: Jan 03 '01
Pros:Beautiful Setting
Cons:Parking

Memorial Stadium in Berkeley is best place to watch a college football game on the West Coast. The stadium sits on the south side of the University of California at Berkeley campus and offers great views of the pine tree lined Berkeley hills to the east and the San Francisco bay to the west.

The stadium seats 75,662 fans. Although Cal has not been to a bowl game since 1996, Memorial Stadium still boasts a largely supportive fan base. Reserved seating costs about $28 per ticket. While general admission seats sell for $14 for adults and $10 for children and seniors. The general admission seats are located behind the end zones along both the north and south sides of the stadium. For the "Big Game" (Cal vs. Stanford) prices go up to $50 and all seats in the stadium are reserved except for the student section.

Getting to Memorial Stadium is a headache and so is finding parking. That's why I suggest that you plan on getting to the game early and use public transportation. If possible take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transportation), the areas subway system, to the Berkeley station. The station located underneath the intersection of Shattuck and Center streets in downtown Berkeley and is a 20-25 minute walk to Memorial Stadium. Free shuttles are also available from the station to the stadium for those who don't want to make the hike through campus. Parking cannot be found in near the stadium in Berkeley for reasonable prices. Many homeowners that live near the stadium charge $20-30/game to park on their lawns and driveways. There are a few parking garages downtown but don't expect them to have spaces unless you arrive very very very early!!!

Food at Memorial Stadium is expensive and not very toothsome. Expect to pay $4 for either a small hot dog or a tray of nachos. That's why I would suggest eating before or after the game in downtown Berkeley. There are some great post-game restaurants along Telegraph Avenue including Blondie's Pizza and Blake's just to name a few.

Memorial Stadium is a great place to watch a college football game due to it's affordability, quaint setting and proximity to great eateries. Memorial Stadium is truly one the best places to watch a football game in the country.
