| irishfan1's Full Review: Notre Dame Stadium |
(That quote is from Rudy, in case you didn't recognize it)
I have been to Notre Dame Stadium twice, once in 2000 for the Boston College game and then in 2001 for Southern Cal. The Irish won both games, so there is no way I would complain even if the stadium wasn't great, but it was anyway.
The band plays a concert before every game on the steps of one of the campus's buildings (I can't remember which one). They play some standards every game, but they mix in other selections as well. The band then marches, single file, all the way to the stadium. Throngs of people mass on both sides of the path the band takes to the stadium, and the atmosphere is absolutely awesome. After the band has reached the stadium, the players march along the same path into the stadium. All of this takes a long time, like an hour, but the excitement stays high the entire time. In addition, there are about 100,000 people milling around all the time, which is fun to be a part of, and there are good concessions all over campus before the game.
Getting tickets to an ND home game should not be difficult, considering that there are lots of scalpers all over the place, on and off campus (Scalping is legal in Indiana, but the University doesn't want scalping on the campus. There is anyway, though.) I have never had to buy a ticket from a scalper, but I have been told that the prices tend to be reasonable. I got my tickets through a friend who was attending Notre Dame. In fact, at the USC game, I sat (or rather stood) in the student section. I highly recommend this if you get the chance. The seats in the rest of the stadium tend to be rather cramped, owing to the fact that there is bleacher seating all around the stadium. In the student section, however, everyone stands and they tend to spread out quite a bit. They also do a lot of crazy cheers and whatnot, although some of them I found somewhat offensive.
Overall, seeing the Irish play in Notre Dame Stadium stands as one of the high points of my life, and I fully intend to go again any time I get the chance.
Note: Despite what people may tell you, there is ample parking all over the place in South Bend/Notre Dame. We parked in a neighborhood close to the stadium for the USC game, and reached the stadium within ten minutes. We did not pay a dime.
