Pros:Indoors, LOUD, cozy, fun atmosphere, the Colts, accessible
Cons:Small, outdated, cramped, no escalators, upper level bleachers
The Bottom Line: RCA Dome is a comfortable, cozy, loud place to see the NFL, although cramped and dated. If you can get tickets, see the Colts in their last year at RCA!
I went to the RCA Dome in 2005 for two Colts games, a preseason vs. the Bills in August, and Monday Night in November against the Steelers. Obviously, the Steeler game on MNF was far louder and bigger, as the Colts were riding a long undefeated streak at the time, and the place was just LOUD and electric. My seat was in the upper deck, which meant hiking up the stairs to sit in a bleacher seat. The concession stands and restrooms were OK, but in a cramped concourse. It's also the smallest facility in the NFL, meaning that tickets are hard to come by (and much harder now coming off their Super Bowl XLI title!)
One of the pros of the RCA dome is its location, being attached to the Convention Center, connected via Skywalks, and right near Circle Centre Mall, which was packed! A vibrant downtown, indeed. Several hotels are nearby, and so is a lot of parking, which means things to do for those who get there early but don't care to tailgate.
If you want to see an event at the Dome, get going! It will be replaced next year (2008) with the Lucas Oil Stadium going up next door. It will be much larger, filled with many more amenities, including escalators and more restrooms, concessions, and seats, and have a retractable roof. At least Indianapolis is smart to build something that will be used more than 10 times a year.
Yes, the RCA Dome is old and will soon be history, but it has served Indianapolis and Indiana well, but the new stadium will serve it better. I'll miss the old RCA Dome, but will definitely appreciate the new place (why not just call it Lucas Stadium?)
