| mandmgross's Full Review: Wrigley Field |
OK, right up front, I must admit that I am addicted to Wrigley Field. I have spent a LOT of time there. In fact, during spring quarter my second year of college, I am pretty sure I spent more time there than in the classroom.
For a true and classic baseball game experience, I recommend Wrigley Field without question. It really doesn't matter if the Cubs win or lose, if the weather is cold or hot, you can have a great time here. It it more about the enthusiasm and environment than anything else.
First off, don't drive to the game. Take the El or a bus or a taxi but DON'T even think you can get a parking space in this crowded residential neighborhood if you come later than 4 hours before the game. (OK, so I DID park illegally right out front on Opening Day once and I DID get away without a ticket but that was dumb blind luck!)
It doesn't really matter what kind of seats you get here because EVERY seat has a great view of the game - I've sat right behind home plate, at the top of the upper deck and in the bleachers and enjoyed myself each and every time. However, for true Cubs ambience, I do recommend the bleacher seats. Here, the bleacher bums and the profanities they yell at the outfielders for the opposing team (and sometimes at their own team) make for as much entertainment as the game itself. It was truly a day of pride for my friends in the bleachers when they provoked Barry Bonds to flip them "the bird."
Sadly, a small but great part of Cubs history and tradition, Harry Carey, is no longer with us. But you should still participate in a rousing and raucous rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" in his honor.
Whether the Cubs win or lose, going to Wrigley Field is about the experience. Along with thousands of complete strangers, you are cheering for the team no one expects to win and you share that common bond and tradition. When the Cubs DO manage to win one, the joy in the stadium is palpable and it is quite normal to hug and high-five all around you - whether you know them or not! To me, this is what sets the Wrigley Field experience apart from any other ballpark.
