I love the smell of burning weeds in the morning….

Written: Feb 23 '13 (Updated Feb 24 '13)
Pros:Destroys any plant growth effectively and efficiently without chemicals.
Cons:Bulky propane tank to lug around, dangerous and must be used with extreme caution.
The Bottom Line: For the DYI person that prefers a more environmentally friendly method of weed control, this is a must have tool.

Description & Usage:

The theory behind the Weed Dragon is to heat the plant destroying its cell structure and it takes less than a second. Torching them beyond recognition isn’t really necessary and will waste fuel. Results are instant "wilting" of the plant followed by a noticeable yellowish brown discoloration the next day.

With temperatures of 2,000 degrees F the Weed Dragon VT 2-23 C is ideal for killing unwanted plant growth but has multiple uses around the house as well such as melting ice, insect and spider web control, starting a campfire or debris pile. The unit comes fully assembled and simply needs connected to a portable (gas grill style) propane source, preferably a 20 lb cylinder.  We have ours strapped down on a small utility dolly. The manufacturer sells a tank dolly as well as other accessories. Depending on the heat setting, flame temperature and the amount of propane consumption will vary.

My experience:

I have over an acre of land that requires quite a bit of maintenance to eradicate and control weeds, especially from mid February through the end of March. Our biggest problems are with Nutsedge and Bittercress which we have previously dealt with chemically using “Sedge-Hammer” and “Round-Up”. Both herbicides are and have been effective, yet very costly. During the first sign of Bittercress appearing I decided to try “Weed-torching” instead of chemicals. The idea is to kill the plants early on before they can produce new seeds. After doing a little research I decided that the 100,000 BTU Weed Dragon would be perfect for the task. I’m able to quickly scorch the weeds without catching landscape bark on fire as well as not melting plastic sprinklers or Rain-Drip irrigation components. With just the right amount of flame and perfect timing, I’m able to spot-treat around delicate plants without causing harm.

Compared to spraying chemicals, it takes twice as long with the Weed Dragon. So far my wife and I have spent about 2 hours with the “VT 2-23 C” model and the propane tank is still about half full. That’s about $5 worth of fuel versus (I’m guessing) at least $10 of chemicals. We also run the torch at roughly the half-way setting which works fine. Also I do have (and recommend) a water jug nearby as dried leaves will catch fire.

After 10 days most every weed we’ve hit is still visible however they’re either dead, severely wilted or half-way disintegrated. Some of the large broadleaf weeds will possibly need a second round or be pulled up to be completely gone.

Final thoughts:

There are several videos online that will give you a better idea how the Weed Dragon works in action. Type in: “weed dragon video”. The 1:03 minute DYI video is to-the-point. I highly recommend owning this product and it should not disappoint. With propane priced at around $2.00 a gallon, it's costing me less compared to applying Round-Up.

What’s in the box?

A 100,000 BTU 27.5 inch torch wand with 10-ft hose, in-line regulator, adjustable valve control, hand-held flint igniter, product registration card, owner’s manual with instructions and helpful hints.
