If there's one thing A&E is good for, it's a good crime drama. Now, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Law and Order addict, and A&E provides back episode's from at least 6 past seasons. But there are lots of other crime shows on, both fictional and investigative.
Fictional Crime Shows
Besides showing repeats of old cop shows like Simon and Simon and Magnum PI, they have their "Mysteries to Die For" series which the umbrella under which most of their crime shows exist: Sherlock Holmes, Poirot, Murder She Wrote, and Inspector Morse. I must admit, I'm 23 years old and the thought of watching a show like Poirot which my grandparents might get a kick out of, didn't seem appealing. Then, I actually sat down to watch it and it's intriguing! My wife and I were glued to the set, and we kept having to revise our guess as to "whodunit." I highly recommend it. Of coarse, Law and Order takes the cake for this category of shows. A&E is doing a tremendous service to those of us who just can't get by with the once or twice a week showing on NBC.
Investigative Crime Shows
Let me say that Bill Kurtis is the MAN. This guy can do it all, and the range of investigative shows he hosts on A&E is absolutely amazing. "Investigative Reports," probably the single best documentary series on television right now, will have crime investigations quite frequently, along with many other great and intriguing topics ranging from domestic racial problems to international drug cartels. Kurtis also hosts American Justice, an hour-long look at the progression of a particularly controversial investigation and trial. In addition, he hosts "The Unexplained" which is pretty much explanatory, and just this morning, featured an episode on Secret Societies including the Free Masons and the Skull and Bones order.
In addition to the wealth that Bill Kurtis brings to A&E, there are other crime shows that exist somewhat independently. City Confidential is good, with a good foundational "plot" idea -- feature a crime that takes place in a particularly interesting or surprising city (murder in a small town, for instance). Inside Story is also interesting.
Synopsis
And these are just crime shows! This channel really is amazing, and I have only begun to touch on what it offers. It's timely, entertaining, and educational. It's professional, accurate, and hard-hitting. Some of the documentaries by Kurtis on prostitution and the sex industry were absolutely amazing, and pulled no punches. Certainly not recommended for children, they are, however, professional and not sensational. Do yourself a favor and instead of watching the same sitcom's on your network television stations one evening, tune into A&E and see what's cooking. You will be pleasantly surprised!
