I like ESPNews because I do not have to wait until SportsCenter, though it is on the air all morning except a special sports event like the World Cup soccer and British Open golf tournaments. ESPNews has sports news on 24 hours a day, nothing else. The news and scores are repetitive though at times such as during the overnight and the middle of the day, but at least it provides breaking news.
What I also like about ESPNews is that it does not air ridiculous non-sports related programs like the World Series of Poker, which should never ever be on a sports network because the people involved are not athletes and poker is a card game, not a sport. The content on ESPNews is straightforward and to the point. It does air Pardon the Interruption and Around the Horn every day, but they are sports-related and informative.
I nearly forgot in this opinion that like CNN and Fox News, it has a scrum at the bottom on the screen, containing scores and news updates. I like ESPNews more than ESPN because it wants to be itself and not like ESPN. CNN tried to create a sports news network, CNNSI, to compete against ESPNews, but CNNSI lost money and viewership, and is no longer on the air. I thought it tried too hard to be like ESPN, instead of being itself in creating its own identity. Also, CNN did not own a sports network that was around for some time that would properly develop another channel that the sports fan would turn to for instant sports news and scores.
I knew from the beginning that ESPNews would be on the air for a long time since its resources come on a true sports network (back in 1996, I'm not quite sure what to make of ESPN in 2004, but it is still easily the best in sports). I will say that ESPNews will be on for a long, long time for its commitment of sports coverage.
