Pros: Some really great programming gets a shot, because expectations are lower.
Cons: Some really awful programming hangs on, because expectations are lower.
The Bottom Line: On the whole, enjoyable with some notable faux pas (Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire, etc).

There are many fine shows on Fox. The Simpsons comes to mind. X Files, Dark Angel, Malcolm in the Middle, King of the Hill, Futurama. These are a few creative & interesting shows that tweak regular network programming in the rear.
I don't want to discuss those programs today.
I want to discuss Temptation Island.
The premise of this show is as follows: Four couples, all of whom are young & pretty good looking, go to an island. Thus, the "Island" part of the title.
Once there, they split up into a men's camp & women's camp. They are then introduced to members of the opposite sex and set up on "dates". Thus, the "Temptation".
I was inundated by commercials for this program for about three months prior to its' premiere episode last week. It looked like an intriguing concept. Then I watched it.
First of all, these people are all too good looking. What's up with that? Most of us just don't look like that. The least they could have done was have normal looking couples.
Secondly, the women are, for the most part, insipid. For instance, the couples when they first arrived attended a sort of get together with the "temptors" ... the people they'll be dating while there. The guys had the opportunity to pick the guy they most worried about, and "tag" him so his girl couldn't date that guy. The girls could do the same thing.
Afterwards, scenes are shown of the women & men reacting to the get together. One woman is crying 'I can't believe he had so much fun watching those other women'. Well, excuse me! It's an island, there was music and dancing and pretty women. Are you dating a man with no senses? Of course he is going to react to it! And believe me, the women reacted too!
After this initial get together, the couples say good bye & split up, men to one camp, women to another. They spend the day hanging out with the prospective "dates" then get ready for the big event. They don't know who the date will be. The date shows up, big surprise.
My husband noticed that when the dates showed up, all of the "couples men" shook hands with their date, while the "couples women" all kissed theirs. Interesting.
With one couple, the guy was actually on his date, walking on the beach, while his girlfriend (on her date, on a boat) saw him walking along. Insert to her saying "I couldn't believe he looked like he was having so much fun, and his date was laughing & tossing her hair". Well again, DUH!! What did you expect? Don't you realize that whole thing was a set up? Did you think you'd be coming to TEMPTATION ISLAND so that your boyfriend could meet up with Roseanne Barr or Linda Tripp??? How stupid are you?
And what about the men the women are dating? None of them are ugly. I don't see these women complaining. So what's up with the double standard? You're all there for, as near as I can tell, a great all expense paid vacation & a chance to find out if you can be faithful. Suck it up, stop complaining, and see what you're made of!
I gathered all of this information in precisely six minutes of watching this program.
At that point, I looked at my husband and said "I am offended". He queried "Why?". I explained, "This show has stolen six minutes of my life, and I'll never get them back".
Sweetly he stroked my arm. And then he said, hand to God, "That's alright, sweetheart, you would have just wasted them anyway."
He was probably right. Right, but sleeping alone tonight.
And rest assured, I won't be letting this show get any more minutes off of me.
