The Food Network is one of those networks you turn to when there is nothing else to watch, or if you just really like cooking shows. I don't think it is a network that you could watch 24hours a day but with the variety of different types of cooking shows that the Food Network consists of there is usually something for everyone. This network has shows ranging from cooking on the grill (Hot Off the Grill with Bobby Flay) to cooking with some really weird ingredients (Extreme Cuisine) and it even has some of the older cooking shows like The Galloping Gourmet with Graham Kerr and Julia Child. If you would like to take a look at all of the shows that the Food Network offers you can look them up at http://www.foodtv.com.
Now for some of my favorites on the Food Network. Usually when we turn to this network we watch one of three shows; The Iron Chef, Emeril Live or Good Eats. Each of these shows has something that is unique that interests myself, my husband and even my children.
The Iron Chef is a challenge type cooking show based in Japan and it is described as a Japanese cult hit. In my opinion, it is an American cult hit as well. The premise of the show is that some up and coming chef challenges the Iron Chef, who is chosen from a cast of regular proven chefs. The host of the show then announces the surprise ingredient that is the main theme for each dish. Each chef then has one hour to create as many dishes as possible while still using this particular ingredient. Once the allotted time is up, a panel of judges tastes each dish and judges it on taste and presentation. Once the judging is complete, the overall winner is announced. I have decided that watching The Iron Chef is a great deal like watching a televised sporting event. You have competition, action and a sense of excitement that is enhanced by a running commentary.
Emeril Live is a show that my whole family seems to like, even my eight year old and five year old daughters. However, if you are going to watch Emeril Live you really have to like Emeril Lagasse. He is loud, exuberant, boisterous and excited about cooking. Emeril Live is a fairly down to earth show, however, some of his recipes are not. Maybe it is just me but I don't have all day to whip up a batch of cinnamon buns. There are also some sayings that Emeril uses that are cute to begin with but after a while they become annoying. For instance, he uses the phrase kick it up a notch constantly, the phrase BAM!! at least 3 times per show and I have yet to see a show where he doesn't say, "I don't know where you buy your (insert food product here) but where I buy mine it don't come seasoned." Even with those little annoyances the show is still likeable and because Emeril seems to be from the real world you don't really mind the over use of certain phrases.
Last but certainly not least is Good Eats with Alton Brown. On this particular show you not only get a few new recipes but also a few cooking tips and some interesting information about the particular food that is being showcased for that show. For instance when they did a show about cheese we learned the different types of cheeses, how they are made, as well as what to look for in cheese depending on the particular recipe you are using it in. Good Eats is supposed to be funny and to some maybe it is but it is more of a learning experience for me. The main reason I watch this show is to see what interesting tidbit I am going to learn about cheese, eggs, ice cream and the like.
For those of you who have never watched the Food Network, I strongly urge you to give it a try. Take a look at their website and see if there is something that might just interest you. You might be surprised at what you find and what might just become one of your favorite networks.
