The Golf Channel seemed like a godsend to the avid golf fan when it was introduced. Yet, only the most diehard golfer can constantly watch this channel. Here are my high and lows of The Golf Channel.
HIGHLIGHTS
1. Peter Kessler - It is a mystery how he has not been signed away by a major network. He is I what I guess you would call the regular host of shows like Golf Talk Live & Academy Live. He also appears on various other programs from time to time. He is as smooth a host I have ever seen. He always seems comfortable, makes his guests comfortable, and well, even makes me comfortable. His knowledge of golf is unmatched. To see him at his best watch the 2hr. Golf Talk Live with Greg Norman.
2. Major Tournament Week Coverage - They realize there will be many fans who will tune in during the weeks of the major tournaments to get all the coverage possible. They do a great job covering all the majors and are always on location. I especially like the Viewer's Forum each night after play has been completed.
3. They have finally gotten to the level where the can televise a few of the lower level PGA tournaments. They even carry the weekend coverage of a few of them. This was a big step for them.
LOWLIGHTS
1. Infomercials - I know they need a way to pay their bills, but it gets to be too much after awhile. If I have to see how the PureSpin wedge can back the ball up on concrete one more time....
2. Black-and-White Shows - Maybe it's just me, but I cannot watch golf in black-and-white. Many of the old match-play shows are like this, and this is something I could do without.
3. Too Much Instruction - Every time I am flip it on they are teaching you how to flop the ball over the bunker and have it stop the quickly on the green. There are just way too many instruction shows, save the David Leadbetter show.
Overall, The Golf Channel just has a hard time filling time and keeping viewers interested. They are trying their best, but improvements must be made.
