Fear is Mtv's newest reality based t.v. show. A mixture of the Real World,Blair Witch Project and Survivor all rolled into one but without any real direction.
Does this sound familiar?
Six strangers.
Picked to stay in an haunted place for a few nights.
To find out what happens when people stop being polite and start getting
scared.
Episode one centers on a group of Mtv age people staying over night in an abandoned West Virginia prison. During their stay our young media hogs will have to complete missions(Can you say Road Rules?) to earn along with the glory of being on Mtv, a grand total of 3,000 dollars each. These missions take place in the dead of night in some pretty creepy prison locations. Intermingled with the challenges the audience and I must assume the young media hogs learn the history of the prison through video clips of former inmates, wardens, and ghosthunters.
The kids film themselves ala The Blairwitch Project(the camera is mounted over their heads somehow to capture their faces and the long shots rely on the prison survellience cameras. Now,I'll tell you up front dear readers, I loved the Blair Witch Project. I was frightened while watching this program. The kids reactions seemed real to me and completely believeable. I was glued to the t.v. set except for the 10 minute commercial breaks Mtv seems so happy to air. My main problem with the program is that the situations seem very produced. For example, one challenge features an electric chair covered with a tarp, the young man must pull it off-okay. That sounds scary right? Why would a prison leave the electric chair behind, much less tarp it over? They would haul the chair away when the prison closed.
In a single episode two cast members leave filming, which is the single reason I still tune into the Real World and at best with that you only have one roomate leave a season. Money is at stake although not quite as much as Survivor Rich Hatch pulled in but we are talking cable here. With elements of horror/fantasy/documentary Mtv has managed to capture a good, enjoyable series even with some contrived moments.
So I recommend this show with no reservations during the upcoming Halloween season. Catch it when you can as Mtv has really no set programming schedule.
