Nickelodeon is all of my kids favorite channel, we usually watch 2-3 shows a day, Franklin is a must, and Blue's Clues we can't live without. My 3 year old will begin to interract with Blue usually after Wednesday, because they repeat the same show, for 5 days straight. At first, I thought this was kind of stupid, but then they had a commercial about it on, which said that children learn through repetition, I paid more attention to her day by day and noticed that indeed she was beginning to learn the answers to the questions Steve asked.I see Blue's Clues as more of a show about learning hygiene and more social skills than letters and numbers. Franklin is also more geared towards social skills and the proper way to act.The intermissions between shows bring us our host, Face, who keeps my 1 year old twins enthralled for 2-3 minutes. There is a show on during the afterschool hours that we all watch together called Figure It Out, My 3 year old calls this one "blank blank" if you have seen it you will understand that. It's an entertaining half hour with kids guessing what other kids special talents are. This one is good for the entire family.
And now for the bad, they have recently put a show on Nick Jr. called "Maisy". I hate this show.At first I thought it was cute, but after hearing my daughter mumble and begin answering questions with grunts and squeeks, I shut this one off. I noticed that she got more whiny when she watched this one.The same happened with the teletubbies.I feel, and maybe it's just me , that the last thing a kid needs is to hear intelligible gibberish for a half hour straight.
The other thing that really ticked me off about this station was the Nickelodeon Awards.I thought that it would be a nice time to sit down and watch them with my older kids, as they had asked if they could see it.It was mostly what I expected, but then Brittney Spears comes out in a half shirt, with no bra, and full high beams on. This really offended me, I didn't feel that it was an appropriate outfit for a 17 yr old girl to be wearing in front of a bunch of kids. It was just wrong. I'm not a prude, but sex appeal doesn't need to be a factor on a kids show.I did change the channel while she was on, and my sons did ask me why I changed it, and I told them I didn't like her song.I thought it was a closed issue, but when they were in bed later, I heard one of them tell the other that I changed it because the girls "boobs" were showing.Overall this is a great channel, during the day, and late at night.I personally don't think that the shows in the afternoon are all that good and we don't watch many of them except for the occasional "Who's afraid of the Dark?" and "Figure It Out"But overall it's a good station.
