PBS is a well-known public broadcasting station which broadcasts quality programming without outside commercials such as consumer product advertising and derive a portion of their revenue from government grants and financial support from its viewers. As they do not derive any revenue from outside advertising, their programming lineup is based upon viewer input and thus, they broadcast programs that normally are not found on other network stations.
Their mornings and afternoons are usually filled with childrens programs such as Teletubbies, Zoboomafoo, Theodore Tugboat , Sesame Street, etc. which are great educational viewing for children. These educational programs each teach children in a different way from eye-hand coordination, talking, etc. and focus on a specific age range. Evening programs are focused on news and occasional special programs such as special concerts, documentaries, etc.
The evening lineup is more geared for the adult audience. There's the Nightly Business Report, The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, and other programs that change daily. Those include Travels in Europe, Wall Street Week among others. Periodically, they provide special programming with quality movies and documentaries that you can't find on network television. The only other way to watch these programs is if you bought the videos at a store or rented them. I've watched some great documentaries on famous personalities and history and found them to be top rate. Usually, these special programming occurs during their "sponsor drive".
If you become a "sponsor" of PBS, they will send you a year's subscription to their monthly magazine, which provides information on upcoming programs and a list of their program lineup.
I enjoy watching PBS for the educational programs for children and for the special programs they have periodically. I find that with the saturation of regurgitated sitcoms found on network television nowadays, PBS is a nice breath of fresh air.
That's not to say I don't like to watch prime time sitcoms or comedies, or putting them down. It's nice to get a good laugh but sometimes it's nice to get something educational out of a show.
PBS is a great station for all ages and a nice change from the usual network programming.
