Pros: Great variety of programming, from fantasy trips to places to go on your next vacation.
Cons: Some shows are repeated a little too much
The Bottom Line: If you feel like you need a vacation but can't just get up and go, the Travel Channel is an excellent alternative!

One of my favorite things in life is to travel. Of course, we don't have the money or the flexibility to travel wherever we want whenever we want, but I find the Travel Channel is a great way to escape to various destinations, and even help you plan trips of your own.
One thing I have to say right off the bat is that the Travel Channel is not all posh vacations that 99% of us could never go on. They have great specials where they highlight travels and escapes of the rich, which I really enjoy watching, but the majority of programming highlights places that the average traveler can go to. It really mixes up the programming, and provides places to dream about and aim to visit someday, and places where you can plan to take the family on your next vacation.
I have several favorite shows on the Travel Channel, but I really enjoy anything hosted by Samantha Brown. She brings humor and a down to earth attitude to all the shows she hosts, and makes it much more personal and fun to watch. She has two regular series, Great Vacation Homes and Great Hotels, which run daily and offer looks into some really beautiful vacation homes and hotels that you might never had heard of before, some you might have. What I enjoy is she is just as excited and amazed by everything as you would be if you were there.
There are other series on the channel I enjoy, mainly Travel Channel Secrets and World's Best. New ones come out frequently, and they cover a variety of places. The Travel Channel airs theme weeks frequently, for example this week was "Great Family Vacations Week" where they have shows about family favorite destinations such as Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando among many others. Some weeks I'm not as thrilled by the programming as others, but of course it's personal taste. While I love the national parks, I don't really find it too interesting to watch a show about them, while others may love it. That's the beauty of the Travel Channel, it truly does have something for every traveler.
Another program that airs on a regular basis on the Travel Channel is Lonely Planet, which has one of two hosts that take you to destinations you or I might normally not visit, say the Republic of Georgia and Bulvaria for example. But while the show is not a personal favorite, what I do like is that it shows that every place has something wonderful and new to offer, including countries we wouldn't dream of traveling to.
Don't think that the channel only highlights the usual destinations like sandy beaches and theme parks. There are shows that cover everything from the Great Sturgis motorcycle ride to documentaries on the native tribes of Africa.
The Travel Channel has become one of my favorite channels to tune in to. So whenever you feel like you need a vacation, if getting up and going isn't an option, it's always a great alternative to turn on the TV and watch the Travel Channel. Of course nothing can beat the real thing, but it's an excellent alternative.
