The Travel Channel is awesome. My mother and I could sit and watch it for hours a stretch, in fact we do. The Travel Channel has some high quality shows with very entertaining, interesting hosts.
Shows like Lonely Planet really catch my eye. This show is on every night and its our favorite show. Every night you get to see a different part of the world for a whole hour, with a few rotating hosts. Cameramen follow the host around while the host is being your typical tourist, catching all the sights, BUT, they ask the right questions to bring out some interesting facts. You can see and know everything about Rio de Janeiro, Seville, Thailand, The Great Wall of China, or Iceland. What is really helpful is the tips they give you about hotels, airlines, and traveling in that country at the end of the show.
They have special shows like the International Swimsuit 2000 program which was great. It sounds like a very sexist show that reveals a lot of skin and only talks about females in a derogatory way. Well, I was not disappointed in one of my favorite channels. It impressed me beyond belief. It showed how difficult it was to be the photographer, the model, the makeup artist etc. and how everything was done, without ANY emphasis on the fact that the models were wearing next to nothing. They showed countries like Brazil, Jamaica, and the Canary Islands, telling cultural facts, etc, emphasizing (rightly so) the country and its cultural affects on the outcome of the photos.
The channel is great for the traveler at heart who doesn't have a lot of money. Everyone will find their favorite show here!
