It’s 4:00 in the afternoon on a rainy Tuesday. You called in sick from work … you feel as if a bus has hit you. As you flip through stations on the TV, something catches your eye. Unlike the useless garbage being chewed up and spit out at you on other channels, this one seems intelligent, witty and insightful. It takes you through a jungle in Peru and through the skyscrapers of Mexico City. “What a great channel,” you think as the show goes to a commercial.
THE TRAVEL CHANNEL? IV’E BEEN WATCHING THE TRAVEL CHANNEL? It’s sad but true. You too have been sucked into the addictive world of history. Suddenly you feel like the kid asking for more homework in math class … the one who always looked at life as an educational experience. Never fear … there is always the Jerry Springer show to go back to if you find the TC boring … but would you want to?
What this Channel is all about
Every day the world gets smaller, or so they say. Could it be that the world is only getting smaller because we are narrowing our view? In a world with so much, we seemed to be so sucked up by the hassles of everyday life, that we forget about the big picture. That is what vacations are all about … and the Travel Channel is here to help.
There are four types of programs on the Travel Channel
*Stories about people – The Travel Channel likes to single our individual people and see how they spend their lives. From those who live in solitude, to those who live in posh penthouse apartments in New York City … these are basically biographies.
*Stories about places – Occasionally a show is done about a particular region. It has nothing to do with its history and does not give many tips on a trip to such a location, but it is often insightful and/or interesting.
*Stories about history – This week (the week I am writing this) there will be a history show done on The Golden Gate Bridge. I believe the purpose of these shows are to entertain, and inspire others to possibly visit the location.
*Vacation outlines – These are typically an hour long and detail information about a whole region. They are very funny, incitiful and informative. If you are thinking about visiting a location that is going to have a program done on it, I highly advise you to watch.
Should I have my kids watch it?
Definitely! This network is interesting and fun and your kids will get a kick out of it. They will be learning something too … which is an added plus … but it should not be too hard to get you children to watch programming on this station. Very rarely is there any mention of inappropriate topics, but none the less, parental guidance is suggested.
Other interesting info
It may be helpful to watch this station’s sister site “The Weather Channel” when getting ready for a trip. Their forecasts are accurate and cover a wide range of regions.
Some of the “cast” members have accents to fit the “traveling” mood of the network. It may sometimes be difficult to understand the hosts and it may be necessary to turn your Closed Captioning on.
Teachers, check out some of this information for your classes. It may be an easy way out of a day of lessons ;)
