The Weather Channel is an absolute necessity for about 1% of the time in a given year. It's a good way to find out when your neighborhood blizzard is going to let up, or how who's homes are being washed down the flooded rivers of the country. But other than that, I'm convinced that the only reason the Weather Channel exists is to provide a place to work for those meteorologists who finished in the bottom of their class. C'mon! Who else would you get to go stand in the eye of a HURRICANE as it demolishes an entire city?! Some of their field correspondents want a job a little to badly in my opinion.
While they don't have many commercials, The Weather Channel has very little local significance. If however, you always want to know the high and low temperatures in a bunch of cities that you DON"T live in, the Weather Channel is your source.
