Pros: Long wearing, sheer and subtle, cheek and lip stain, compact tube, blendable
Cons: Shade is very sheer and subtle on my medium skin.
TheBalm Stainiac Tinted Gel Blush in Prom Queen is actually a both a lip and cheek stain. It works well on my cheeks but I can barely see it on my lips. I prefer the shade Beauty Queen which is a deeper red color to Prom Queen which is more of a rosy pink red. Still, this stain is sheer and very long wearing.
About the Product
Stainiac “hint of tint” works with all skin tones. Dab just a touch on your cheeks or lips, or layer to pop the color. Fear not those dreaded streaks most tints leave behind - Stainiac’s aloe-infused formula is designed to give you more time before the stain sets.
This stain comes in a silver tube with a matching screw off silver top. It looks like a tube of lip gloss. The applicator is sponge tipped, again, just like a gloss. The product is watery and can spill if you tip the tube over so you should be careful about that. The shade Prom Queen is described as sheer red-rosy pink. It looks like that on the applicator but I find it applies lighter or maybe just very sheer. There is no scent or taste. The tube has .3 ounce of product in it.
TheBalm website had a 24 hour 50% off sale on all their products and I stocked up like crazy. I wasn't even sure what I was buying. That's a cosmetics addict for ya! TheBalm Stainiac Tinted Gel Blush in Prom Queen is described as both a lip and cheek stain and the photos on the site show it on both lips and cheeks. I went by the photos to buy two of the three shades sold.
When I received the tube, I was eager to try it out. I adore Benefit Benetint Rose Tinted Cheek and Lip Stain but am always eager to try new shades and brands of stains. This one applies like a lip gloss on the lips with its soft sponge tipped applicator. The color on my lips is just a shade deeper than my own lips and it's barely visible. It's not shiny but it also is not at all drying. It is very sheer and lightweight, unlike heavy lip gloss/lip stains.
The product works better for me on my cheeks. I dot it onto my skin and blend. Unlike most cheek stains, this one doesn't immediately stain so I have time to blend it without it drying as I am doing so. That is a plus. Some stains actually stain immediately and blending evenly is tough. Not so with TheBalm Stainiac Tinted Gel Blush.
It is super sheer and one layer will give me just a hint of a flush. I use one layer when I am using a pigmented powder blush over it but I layer the stain when I plan to use it alone or with just a touch of powder blush.
The stain lasts for hours and doesn't streak at all. Prom Queen is very subtle. I think it works best for light skin. I have medium skin and it only gives me a slight flush unless I layer it. But that flush stays put and looks very natural. It's matte and looks like the color is coming from within.
I wash this stain off my face with my usual cleanser and it removes well. However, if my face gets damp or dewy, the stain doesn't run or fade. It has good staying power and will be great in summer when I want a slight flush with no hassles or worries.
The lip gloss-like tube is great for tossing into even a small bag and it works double duty although I use it on my lips only under deeper shades of lip gloss or lipstick because I like a bit more color that this shade gives me.
This doesn't winkle or make my lips prune-like and fades slowly without patchiness.
You can purchase TheBalm Stainiac Tinted Gel Blush in Prom Queen and in the two other shades (Beauty Queen and Homecoming Queen) from TheBalm's website or any store that sells higher end cosmetics on or offline. The cost is $18.00 per tube but I got mine for half price which I feel is a steal.
I like TheBalm Stainiac Tinted Gel Blush in Prom Queen but not as much as I like Benetint. Still, the applicator is much easier to carry around with me (Benetint comes in a glass bottle with a brush applicator like nail polish) and it lasts for hours with no streaking. It also allows me time to blend well before it dries which makes my skin look more natural than when I use a stain that immediately stains the areas I dot it on. I am going with 4 stars but I suggest, if you like a deeper flush, trying Beauty Queen. If you like a peachy shade, Homecoming Queen is for you. If you like a subtle, sheer, natural flush of color, Prom Queen will give you that.
