Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Teaches a valuable life lesson.

Cons:It is also predictable and sappy.

"Golf is like a love affair: if you don't take it seriously, it's no fun. If you do take it seriously, it breaks your heart."
Arnold Daly

What is it about sports movies that makes a grown man like myself cry? I have never been involved in competitive sports but I shed a tear during films like Pride Of The Yankees, Brianís Song, Hoosiers, and Jerry Maguire. Sometimes they are tears of sadness. Other times they are tears of joy, as my emotions and anticipation get high I find myself crying even when I know all along that the central character is going to overcome the tremendous odds.

The new film by director Robert Redford, The Legend Of Bagger Vance, had the same effect on me. It is a charming tale, based on a novel by Steven Pressfield, which takes on a journey of redemption, forgiveness, and lessons to live by. Blend all of this with great golf scenes and you have a winner. I am not a golf fan, but I couldnít help but get swept up in this movieís portrayal of the game. I may never have a love for this game but now I further understand why so many are obsessed with it. It is not just a game for them. It is a love and passion. Everyone needs things to be passionate about in life. Thatís what makes us complete.

During the Depression the folks had to be strong and passionate about life or they could have been destroyed. Many were.

In the middle of this American struggle is Rannulph Junuh (Matt Damon), a reclusive soul who lives by his bottle. He used to be a golf prodigy who won the heart of the most beautiful girl in Savanah, Adele Invergordon (Charlize Theron). He was in WWI hoping to come home a hero.

Like many soldiers of war, Junuh returns a totally different person. A quiet and bitter man who leaves everyone behind. He wants to forget and be forgotten.

It had been ten years since Adele has seen or heard from Rannulph. Still broken up over his leaving her, she really does not want to hear from him, but she needs his help. Her father recently passed away and his elite golf resort suffers in the grip of the Depression. Her idea is to stage a great golf battle between the two greatest golfers in the world, Bobby Jones (Joel Gretsch) and Walter Hagen (Bruce McGill).

The people of Savannah want something more though. They want the best local golfer to challenge the masters to show them what Savannah is all about. The name which is brought up at a town meeting is Rannulph Junu. Isnít he washed up now though? Isnít he sheltering himself from the rest of the world?

A young fan, Hardy Greaves (J. Michael Moncrief) tracks down the former star and begs him to come out of retirement and play in the competition. Even Adele shows up, knowing that having Junuh in the event will only garner more interest.

If Junuh is going to compete he has to get over his main obstacle. He has lost the love for the game. He no longer has the swing that he once had. But then, from out of the darkness, comes a total stranger who introduces himself as Bagger Vance (Will Smith). Vance seems to be the last hope for our hero. At first Vance may sound like he knows more about golf than anyone else, but in actuality he knows more about life and he challenges Junuhís heart, mind, and soul.

Redford is known to direct movies with great characters and an awe-inspiring setting. This film is no exception. The pure beauty of the film is also created by the excellent cinematography of Michael Ballhaus and Rachel Portmanís superb orchestration.

The filmís acting is not too shabby either. Damon and Smith both have a charm about them that makes it hard for us to fault them. This is really Smithís most dramatic role since Six Degreeís Of Separation back in 1993. Although he is not given much to do, he still gives out a sort of Sidney Potier quality - that great balance of dramatic and comedic timing. Iím looking forward to seeing him really show his dramatic skills in the upcoming Muhamad Ali film.

The funny thing is that even though I loved this film, I knew how it was going to end and I knew that Redford was playing with our emotions. But I still like this charming movie. Unlike other sappy films, this one is an exquisite tale with a very poignant moral. The search for tranquillity is a lifetime goal. Bagger Vance shows that being happy with oneself is not a feeling but a state of being. Of course evil is going to get in our way and sometimes possibly take over. It was up to Vance to guide Junuh back from the demons. His speeches about finding his authentic swing and seeing the field were not all about golf in the first place.
