Pros:fun, great adventure, likable characters, good action, great dialogue, good cgi

Cons:not deep enough or scary enough for some viewers

The Bottom Line: The adventure of a lifetime...

Many generations ago the high priest, Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), loved the most forbidden woman in Egypt, the Pharaoh's mistress. For love of Anck Su Namun (Patricia Velasquez), he betrayed his position, his people, his country... and slaughtered his king. He brought havoc to the city to rescue her remains that he might perform the rite of resurrection, but the royal guard captured him before the ritual was complete. For the memory of her gilded touch Imhotep was punished with the worst of all ancient curses, the Hom-Dai. Mummified alive, bound and lost beneath the sands of time, he waits to rise again as a powerful and immortal being, reclaim his beloved, and rule the world!

Only a small tribe of dedicated desert warriors knows the tale, and they guard his tomb most vigilantly. Through a twist of Fate, two people have survived their swift justice. Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and the cowardly Beni (Kevin J. O'Connor) both know the location of Egypt's greatest treasure house. Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz), librarian and aspiring Baimbridge scholar, happens across an artifact linked to the legend of Hamunaptra, thanks to the quick fingers of her brother, Jonathan (John Hannah).

Ransoming Rick from a public execution, they form a small expedition, but quickly find that Beni has found his own treasure-hungry backers. Now it's a race to see who will get there first, but no matter who gets there first, they will find far more than they bargained for! Imhotep awaits them, and should he arise from this terrible curse he will spread his power like a plague across the face of the world!

~~~ My Thoughts ~~~
Evelyn: "No, I've never seen a mummy look like this before. He's still... still..."
Rick & Jonathan: "...juicy."
I remembering hearing a lot of dissatisfaction over this 1999 film. I have to think that people were expecting something far more frightening. The Mummy is a fabulous piece of entertainment! Built around a classic legend, there is plenty of action, some great CGI moments that were fabulous on the big screen, solid acting, flavorful characters and a good old-fashioned adventure feel that is seldom seen outside of an Indiana Jones film. There is a certain touch of innocence found here that is rarely seen in films now, that marks the Mummy as a tribute to the classic adventure horror films that surely inspired its makers.
A delightful and thrilling adventure, The Mummy stands up to repeated viewings pretty well. There are plenty of humorous moments, like juggling the head of a mummy you've just decapitated and using a crawling mummy arm to reach your gun. The dialogue flows freely and is well delivered, whether serious or amusing in content. Fights are well choreographed, and the CGI really compliments the story very well. Sets and costumes add distinct flavor to the film.
Rick: "For the record, if I don't make it out of here, don't put me down for mummification."
The library scene with Evelyn wreaking havoc was shot in one take, and would have taken another whole day to shoot if anything had not gone as planned. Yet, her clumsiness seems completely natural and oddly charming, which really sets the tone for her character and the film itself. The chemistry between Fraser and Weisz is believable and rather sweet. Evelyn's character is certainly more knowledgeable about all things Egyptian, but definitely more innocent than Rick when it comes to staying alive.
Yet, Rick manages to convey that deliberate and very attractive innocence that comes through as an adventurer's sense of honor and genuine respect for the lovely Evelyn. Fraser shines as the life-hardened adventurer with a noble streak, and his origins are rather intriguingly mysterious. Jonathan is completely incorrigible and thoroughly believable as the endearing rascal, a good foil for both Evelyn and Rick. Jonathan is what Beni could have been if he had any class, cleverness, or charm. You can't help liking Jonathan even though you know he is a weak individual.
Evelyn: "You know, nasty little fellows such as yourself always get their comeuppance."
I was particularly impressed with O'Connor as Beni though. Leering, whining and cringing his way through all the action, O'Connor gave us a bad guy we can love to hate, and Beni delivers some great scenes throughout the film. When he is initially confronted by the freshly raised Imhotep, he desperately sorts through his many necklaces trying various religious symbols to drive the mummy away. Very amusing moment, and Beni is easily understood. Two things motivate him; greed and fear. Obviously shifty, born to betray, the perfect servant for Imhotep... we eagerly anticipate Beni eating his just desserts.
Vosloo as Imhotep is commanding, driven, and incredibly comfortable with his many powers. The film would not be the good adventure it is without a powerful and frightening villain. Mummy films before this never frightened me simply because they weren't intimidating enough. Traditionally slow, shambling and falling apart, Mummies before Imhotep were more pathetic than frightening. Vosloo rips away those moldy wrappings and gives us a monster worth fearing! Able to set in motion all the most infamous plagues from boils to fiery rain, Imhotep's powers are extend far beyond immortality. He is an indestructible preternatural force, like a sentient tornado he cuts across the screen boldly and believes in his right to live as a god.
Good story, plenty of action and adventure, laughs, romance, truly icky moments and the kind of horror that comes from realizing you've unleashed a nearly inexplicable force of domination and destruction upon the world makes for a great film. Fun, quotable and highly entertaining, The Mummy is a great adventure able to captivate a wide range of viewers. The lesser cautionary rating is largely for language and partial nudity, but there really isn't anything too offensive to be found here. The third Mummy movie is due to be released in August (2008). If the Mummy hasn't grabbed your attention, now is a great time to get acquainted!
Evelyn: "You better think of something fast, because, if he turns me into a mummy you're the first one I'm coming after."
