Mummy... I want to be Indiana Jones when I grow up!

Pros:Fast, furious and fun... great cast

Cons:... plot doesn't bear too much thinking about!

The Bottom Line:

Proof that Brendan Fraser was once a very good actor - The Mummy is a fantastic undemanding action comedy.

The Mummy is a rip-roaring archeological adventure starring Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell.  Rick is an American in the Foreign Legion (as with most things do to with this sort of thing, it's probably safer not to ask questions like "how?" or "why?"!), and stumbles across some sort of mystery at the ancient city of Hamunaptra.  Some time will pass before he meets clumsy librarian Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and her brother Jonathon (John Hannah), and the three of them end up going to uncover ancient Egyptian secrets, in competition with another group of adventurers keen to get their hands on legendary gold.  The trouble is, of course, that some secrets are best left uncovered...

From start to finish The Mummy is a riot of action and humour.  While most plot elements don't hold together under scrutiny any better than most similar films, it really doesn't matter.  These were the days when Brendan Fraser was one of the most promising young actors around (not sure what's happened in the last few years, but 1999 was a very good year for him, with Blast from the Past of that year being another of his best performances).  He's not perhaps what you'd normally expect in an action hero role but he pulls it off with aplomb, and handles the comedy element very well too.  Most of the scenes are very much played for laughs, but with a very creepy bag guy in the form of the Mummy (the artist formally known as High Priest Imhotep) and some slightly gory effects, it has a bit of a horror edge to it as well.  The bad guy is in fact one we can still sympathise with, having had a horrible curse put on him and all for the sake of love and all that.   Other characters include Beni (Kevin J. O'Connor), a man you can trust about as far as you can comfortably spit out an elephant, and Winston, a man of the Royal Air Force for whom all the challenges seem to have gone... until he meets Rick and Eve, of course...

Rachel Weisz is wonderful as Evelyn, ditzy and gorgeous and very funny all at the same time.  There is some sparkling chemistry between her and Brendan Fraser, and that very much adds to the film.  It's the inclusion of John Hannah as her brother that really puts the icing on the cake though - he's hilarious and helps enormously to keep the comedy element working.  There were no bad performances and Arnold Vosloo does a great job as Imhotep / The Mummy, while Patricia Velasquez is good as Anck Se Namun, the woman he loves - still - after centuries of a living death.  All very romantic and adds to your sympathy for him, though that he wants to use Eve as a sacrifice to get his woman back obviously is a bit of a problem...

The special effects are well done and there are some spectacular set pieces.  It all looks great and thanks to Jerry Goldsmith's music score, it sounds great as well.  Stephen Sommers at the directorial helm keeps the action, comedy and visual wonders coming thick and fast, making this great entertainment (if not exactly cerebral).  The dialogue is also very good throughout.  All in all this is a great revamp of an old horror cliché, done with great style and bravado, and with a cast that fit the bill perfectly.  Might be a bit scary in places for children but if you like action comedies, there are few better than this.

Quotes

Evelyn: Look, I... I may not be an explorer, or an adventurer, or a treasure-seeker, or a gunfighter, Mr. O'Connell, but I am proud of what I am.
Rick: And what is that?
Evelyn: I... am a librarian.

-------------------------------------------------

Beni: Hey, O'Connell! It looks to me like I've got all the horses!
Rick: Hey, Beni! Looks to me like you're on the wrong side of the river!

-------------------------------------------------

Beni: It is better to be the right hand of the devil than in his path.

-------------------------------------------------

Evelyn: Have you got any bright ideas?
Rick: I'm thinking, I'm thinking...
Evelyn: You better think of something fast, because, if he turns me into a mummy you're the first one I'm coming after.

-------------------------------------------------

Evelyn: You lied to me.
Jonathan: I lie to everybody. What makes you so special?
Evelyn: I am your sister.
Jonathan: Yes, well that just makes you more gullible.

-------------------------------------------------

Rick: I only gamble with my life, never my money.

-------------------------------------------------

Evelyn: By the way, why did you kiss me?
Rick: I don't know. I was about to be hanged. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

-------------------------------------------------

Rick: Well if it ain't my little buddy Beni. I think I'll kill you.
Beni: Think of my children.
Rick: You don't have any children
Beni: Someday I might.

-------------------------------------------------

Rick: That's called "stealing," you know.
Evelyn: According to you and my brother it's called "borrowing."

-------------------------------------------------

Rick: Let me get this straight, they ripped out your guts and they stuffed them in jars?
Evelyn: And they take out your heart as well. Oh, and you know how they took out your brains?
Jonathan: Evy, I don't think we need to know this
Evelyn: They take a sharp, red hot poker, stick it up your nose, scramble things about a bit, and then rip it all out through your nostrils.
Rick: Ooh, that's got to hurt.
Evelyn: It's called mummification, you'll be dead when they do this.
Rick: For the record, if I don't make it out of here, don't put me down for mummification.
Jonathan: Likewise.
