One of the best movies of all time !

Review by
Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Pretty much everything about this movie.

Cons:Only Elmo Blatch being wrongly cast in my books.

The Bottom Line: An excellent movie that I think pretty much anyone would like, but ofcourse some of its content may not be very pleasent hearing for younger people to learn.

I have watched this movie well over 20 times since it came out, and if you have not managed to watch it yet then I suggest strongly that you do, as Morgen Freeman, and Tim Robins act extremly well.

The genre may be prison based, and ofcourse anyone with any form or morals would not want to intentionally go to prison, as well as Tim Robins charactor wouldn't, but due to some incredibly bad luck, and some poor decision making by the justice system he is put behind bars for something he was innocent of.

Although put behind bars Andy Dufresne (Tim Robins) makes a few friends, but most of all in Red (Morgan Freeman) who eventually becomes his best friend through out the movie. Red is the guy who can get it, if the price is right.

I enjoyed every second of the movie, and there are a few disturbing scenes such as when the new prisoners come in, and one of them is beaten to an inch of his death, only to die over night. So if you're not into the even darker parts of prison life like Andy Dufresne getting beaten up for some un-savory action, then the few darker scenes may not be your cup of tea, and not mine, but this is why the movie is so good. It doesn't hold back from showing you the darker sides of prison life.

Although I did find the scene where the guy who actualy killed Andy Dufresne's wife confessed to Tommy (who Andy Dufresne took under his wing in the movie) was a little wierd that someone would confess to someone what he had done so easily.

Andy eventually gets into the warden's good books so well that he cons him out of some money, and makes a fake person up. The money ofcourse goes all to Andy, who ofcourse acts as the false person. So he basicly had to go to prison to become a felon !!

The movie ofcourse ends with a happy ending, and if you have not seen it I will ofcourse not ruin it by telling you what happens, but every charactor is well acted, and nobody is out of place. Although in saying that Elmo Blatch the guy who acutally kills Andy Dufresne's wife, and the guy she was having an affiar with was a wierd choice of casting as I found he was the only fault in the movie, but a casting error not anything else.

The movie is also helped immensely by Morgan Freeman's charactor telling some of the story throughout which holds it together very well, otherwise I think it would have been much of a lesser movie than it it, but not to much of a lesser movie mind you !

All in all this movie holds it's own weight in gold, and even Brooks Hatlen who plays the older prisoner who is so old that it is inevitable he is going to be released wether he likes it not is played very well. At I first thought what was the point of this charactor, but the charactor tells its own story of what life would be like if you spend so many decades out of "general population", and then suddenly you are realeased. He didn't know anything else, but prison. Ofcourse his charactor shows a darker side of life that is not very pleasent, and that is when he takes his own life due not to being able to handle outside life.
