Pros:Acting, directing, better plot, Loki

The Bottom Line: Thor:  The Dark World is much better than the original Thor.  Give it a try.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

I am a big fan of the Avengers series of movies.   The Avengers film is one of my favorite films, and Thor is one of my favorite characters.  I enjoyed the first Thor film but it wasn’t spectacular.   The plot was lacking a bit, and there were some acting problems.  However, I do like Chris Hemsworth so I thought I would give Thor: The Dark World a chance.  I am glad I did.  It is much better than the first Thor film.  The plot seems more thought out, and has some nice twists and turns.  We get to see Thor’s character continue to develop (there has to be a personality in there somewhere), and we get to see more of Loki and his tricks.  It was a good action film that had me laughing quite a bit as well.  I had a good time watching it.

Plot:  Just like many of the Marvel films, we begin with the evil villain back plot.  It seems thousands of years ago when Odin’s father ruled Asgard there was a war between the warriors of Asgard and some beings called Dark Elves.  The Dark Elves were around when there was just darkness, no light and no life.  They would really like to plunge all nine realms including Earth back into that darkness so they could rule.  Odin’s father defeated the Dark Elves but their leader Malekith escaped.  He had been trying to use a weapon called the Aether to wreck destruction on the nine realms, but can only do so when there is a certain alignment to the nine realms.   The Aether could not be destroyed so the warriors of Asgard hid it hoping that it would never resurface.

Now fast forward to present day.  Jane Foster is in London waiting for Thor to return.  It has been two years since she has seen him and she is starting to lose hope.  She has been monitoring her scientific equipment waiting for some sign of his return.  She does pick up a new reading and hoping she has found a way to Asgard and to Thor goes to check it out.   What she has found is a wormhole.  The realms have started to align again, and it has created anomalies in the separation in-between the realms.   This has created gates from one realm to another.  Jane falls into one of these wormholes and finds the hole that the Aether was buried in, and the Aether takes over her body.

Meanwhile, Thor has been leading his band of warriors into the other 8 realms creating peace in those realms. Evidently, after the battle of New York (from The Avengers) the realms fell into chaos, and Thor was charged with the task of pacifying them.  The bridge to the realms has been fixed and Thor can move between worlds again, but his father has forbid him to go to Jane.  Thor does check on her, however, through his friend the gatekeeper.  The gatekeeper can see any soul in any of the realms, but suddenly he cannot see Jane as she is in the wormhole.  Thor has just finished pacifying the realms, and is worried about Jane when the gatekeeper cannot see her so he goes to Earth to see about her.

He finds her possessed by the Aether, and takes her back to Asgard to see if they can figure out what is wrong with her.  Odin figures out she is possessed by the Aether but thinks nothing will come of it except her death because all the Dark Elves are dead or are they? Can Thor save Jane’s life?  Are there Dark Elves still about and will they try to destroy the realms again with the Aether?   You will have to watch the movie to find out.

The action was good in the film.  There are plenty of fights, plenty of destruction, and explosions. Lots of good CG effects.  The plot was sound and thought out.  The script was excellent.  There were a lot of laugh out loud funny moments that were appropriate in the movie.

The acting was also well done.  Chris Hemsworth is a lot better in this film, which could be because he has a better script this time.  I like him as Thor.  He looks and sounds the way I think Thor should.  His character grows quite a bit from the first Thor movie through The Avengers and keeps developing in Thor: The Dark World.   Hemsworth does a good job showing us the change that Thor goes through.  I also like Natalie Portman as Jane.  She is intelligent and spunky and I really like that about her.  I really appreciate that some of the female characters in the Marvel films aren’t just eye candy; they have spunk and personality.  Tom Hiddleston is back as Loki, which to me is still one of the more interesting characters in the Thor films.  We are never sure what he is going to do next.  Will he help Thor or become his enemy?  What is he trying to gain this time?  You will have to watch and see.  Hiddleston does a great job bringing this complex character to life.  Anthony Hopkins is of course great as Odin.   I also like Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis who is Jane’s intern or helper.  She is quite a quirky character and livens up the movie quite a bit. Stellan Skarsgård is great as Erik Selvig the crazy scientist that got them into all this in the first place.  He plays a major role in The Avengers in which he had Loki’s voice in his head for an extended period of time.  This seems to have addled him a bit and lands him in the psych ward.   Skarsgard walks a fine line between genus and crazy in this film and does it quite well.  Although seemingly off his rocker, he has these moments of lucidity where he is brilliant and helps save the day.  Skarsgard makes this character believable.  He did a great job.

Overall, I really enjoyed this film.  I had a good time watching this film, and was thoroughly entertained.  The plot, script, and acting were all good.  Any fan of the Marvel films should see this one.   Also stay after the credits there are some bonus clips.  One is in the credits and one is after the end of the credits.  It is worth sticking around for.
