Pros: durable, holds four bags, wheels, attached lid
We live in the mountains so we need good sturdy garbage cans to keep the animals out of our trash. We have owned a few different garbage cans over the years. About two years ago we bought a Toter 96-Gallon Greenstone Indoor/Outdoor Garbage Can.
At the time we only bought one of the Toter Garbage Cans because of the price. They were a lot more than I thought I should pay for a trash can but in the long run, these garbage cans are so much better than others we have owned that they are well worth the price.
The Toter Garbage Can has a greenstone granite finish with a permanently attached lid. I love that the lid is attached as we do not have to worry about it blowing away on windy days when the garbage men don’t put the lid back on. Before getting the Toter Garbage Can we had many lids destroyed because someone ran over them or we just couldn’t find them after a windy day. The lid of the garbage can is attached but it does not lock. There may have been times that the wind has moved the lid, but it has always remained attached. I also like that the lid is attached and closes so then animals cannot get into our trash. The lid is also easy to open and close. I can easily open the lid with one hand and throw the trash in with the other.
The Toter Garbage Can is made of polyethylene using up to 50% of recycled content. The Garbage Can is on wheels which make it easy to pull up our long lane on trash day. We have pulled them up by hand and with the four wheeler. Where the lid and body attach there is a handle to aid in pulling the trash can. There is also a metal rod in the middle of the outside of the garbage which I am told makes the can compatible with semi-automated and automated lift systems.
The Toter Garbage Can is a 96 gallon capacity. It is said to hold up to 335 pounds. If we made our cans that full, no one in the house could pull them up the lane. The Garbage Can measures 29.75” wide by 43.5” high by 36” deep. It is a good sized garbage can. I normally put three lawn size garbage bag and one kitchen garbage bag in each container.
Since buying the Toter Garbage Can two years ago we have purchased another one. We normally have six to eight bags of trash a week and these two cans easily hold that amount.
With other garbage cans we have owned we have had issues with the animals chewing through the trash cans to get to our trash. We have not had any issues or indication that the animals have even tried to chew through the Toter Garbage Can. I think these cans contain the smell well so the animals don’t even realize there is garbage.
The main reason I held off buying the Toter Garbage Can for so long was the price. We purchased the Toter Garbage Can at Lowe’s for $89.99. To me that is a lot of money for a garbage can. But after I really thought about it, it wasn’t. Before owning the Toter Garbage Can we owned four smaller garbage cans. They cost about $20 a piece and we were replacing them about once a year because the garbage men and the animals were easily breaking them. We also lost many lids. So in the long run, the ninety dollar price tag isn’t so bad since we were able to consolidate to two garbage cans and they have lasted.
The one we have had for two years does show some wear but there are no holes or cracks in the can. The one we had for only a year looks almost new.
The Toter Garbage Can is easy to clean. I don’t know how often we clean them but when I do I just pour some liquid dish soap in the bottom and take the hose and rinse them out.
Toter also makes different size garbage cans. You can purchase smaller sizes to fit your family’s needs. A two family household may not need a 96 gallon garbage can.
Even though the Toter 96-Gallon Greenstone Indoor/Outdoor Garbage Can is expensive, I would highly recommend them. They will save you in the long run.
