I flew in Air-India on the JFK-LOndon-Bombay-Nairobi route and back. Air-India can be summarized to have great service, good food, and an excellent lounge. Service out of NYC 4 was good. On time departure after a smooth check-in, and some impressive features at their lounge. The flight was smooth aboard a 747-400 with cool interior design native to India - the legroom was good, the airhostess were dressed smartly in their ethnic wear, and to most degrees were very friendly - though at times they had a tendancy to become unattentive. Food was great, with native Indian menus showing the choices, and the entertainment was good as well (not Singapore Airlines, but way better than most). Landing at London was great, and I just loved the "Mararaja" lounge there - very impressive with all amenities you can ever imagine of! From free food to the best of drinks, to all the business facilities you could want. Flight from London to Bombay was uneventful - the inflight entertainment kept me busy, and I struck an hour long conversation with a charming airhostess. Smooth landing at Bombay where baggage came almost immediately at the new Air-India terminal - this was followed by a quick transfer to its impress 5 star Centaur hotel property.
The flight to Nairobi was OK. Doesn't compare to its 744, but the Airbus was OK with some entertaining airhostess'.
I have learnt that Air-India has cut back services to many of its destinations due to not profitablity and lack of aircrafts. It really needs to get it back to become the world airline it once was.
I think the airline will behe the next SIA after deregulation. Just have this inside feeling - definitely better than most American airlines, but not what it used to be (1966, 1974 and 1980 IATA Airline of the Year). Definitely recommended for NYC-LON travel outside Virgin.
