Pros: Cheap and friendly. Great stopovers in Bali.
Cons: Long waiting times between connections. Poor on board entertainment.
The Bottom Line: A basic no frills airline offering excellent value for money and good stopover opportunities but not much else. Try them. You may be surprised.

| polevs's Full Review: Garuda Indonesia |
Having travelled with Garuda in 1995 and again in October 2000, it is good to see how much they have improved. I flew to Australia on both occasions. The first time was aboard an ageing Boeing 747-200 most of the way. This aircraft decided to break down resulting in a 2 day long extremely chaotic stay in Jakarta. Apologies and financial compensation seemed to be as scarce as their customer service skills. I vowed never to travel with them again.
The need for fiscal restraint led me to booking (with some trepidation), another flight to Oz with them last year. It was superb. Most of the international flights are now operated by Garuda on a fleet of new (2-3 years old) Boeing 747-400's and Airbuses. The on-board service was friendly, if a little short on finesse. The food is some of the best I have ever had on a plane, with a good choice of western and Asian meals. My flights to Australia ran like clockwork, with all legs of my journey running either on time or a little early. I had a relaxing stopover en-route staying at the excellent Risata hotel in Kuta, Bali.
One thing I will do next time is pay the extra for premium economy seating. This entails a business class seat upstairs in the bubble of the 747. You also get a 30kg luggage allowance, your own personal TV, upgraded meals and drinks and separate check in. This costs just a small premium on top of your economy ticket. When you are stuck on a plane for 24 hours it is well worthwhile.
