It was the summer of '97 and I was returning to the United States. I was flying Korean Air, which I'd generally regarded rather favorably. I've always thought Asian airlines have much more attention to customer service (especially once in the air) compared to American airlines. In any case, I specifically requested the Non Smoking Section, because given the choice I prefer breathing air to toxic fumes.
Five minutes after a punctual take off I thought there was a minor bushfire going on. Smoke clouded the cabin, broken only by the occasional appearance of a stewardess with steaming wet towels or more food. I thought perhaps that they'd made a mistake and seated me in the "Heavy Chain Smoking Grandma Section" so I beckoned a stewardess frantically. Upon hearing of my plight, she nodded sympathetically, reached into her pocket and slapped a "No Smoking" sticker right above my window. Beaming happily at me she said "No Smoking!" I couldn't believe it - the so-called Non-Smoking section was restricted to the vacinity of my seat.
Apart from the continuous plumes of carbon, the actual stewardesses were friendly - food and beverages flowed freely. In addition, the food was actually quite edible, unlike the fare you might find on American or United which would be better used as landfill. However on the whole the experience was unpleasant due simply to the smoke - getting off a plane after 12 hours reeking of smoke is disgusting. Not even the fact that I was seated next to a 5' 11" exotic dancer for 12 hours between Tokyo and LA made up for it.
