| jonbuckheit's Full Review: Malaysia Airlines |
I just returned from a trip to the Maldives and was so impressed with MAS, I felt I had to write some comments. The Maldives isn't easy to get to and not very many scheduled airlines fly there. I wanted to use my frequent flyer miles and found out I could on Malaysia. I booked a first class seat and everything was confirmed. My departure date was November 4th and on October 31st Malaysia had their winter schedule change which significantly impacted my flights. MAS only flies 2 times per week to Male, the capital of the Maldives. The 2 days they flew during the week changed and thus my whole schedule was off. Malaysia called me several weeks in advance to tell me of the change and gave me several options for my trip. They even offered to pay for a couple of days in KL for me.
After everything was worked out to my satisfaction it was time to embark on the 33 hour journey from LAX to Male. The flight from LAX to KL via Taipei was wonderful (via 747-400) The service was so good. The cabin crew asked me where I was going, etc and made me feel right at home. Multiple meals were served with many options. I sampled most every dish and was impressed with the varied selections. The onboard entertainment was excellent. 12 different video channels and the movies were on demand. You can also pause, rewind and fast forward through the movies. There were more than 30 video games available as well. The seats were large and very comfortable. My only complaint is that they didn't lay flat, however it was close enough that I had several hours sleep with no problems.
Upon arrival in KL, I was invited to MAS' Golden Lounge at the Satellite Terminal in the BEAUTIFUL KLIA. This airport is top notch and beautiful. I've flown through Changi several times and I feel that KLIA is better. The lounge is split to 2 sides. One for business class and one for first class, however, one can walk over to either side and I don't think anyone really cares. However, on the first class side there are alot less people, more ammenities like slumberettes and showers. I was happy to shower and catch a quick nap and help myself to a plethora of differnt Western and Asian dishes available.
After about 6 hours in the lounge I made my way to my next flight to Male. This time I was aboard a A330-300. Still with 3 classes of service. First class was comfortable, although on this aircraft I couldn't see too much difference between business and first class. Also on this aircraft there are no personal TV sets, only on small screen in the middle of the cabin so if you are seated on either side of the aircraft in the first row of first class it is hard to see the screen. Food was good, but of course not the calibur of the long haul flights.
Enough said ........... I HIGHLY encourage you to fly with MAS to Asia and beyond!
