August 1999, we flew Amsterdam - Kuala Lumpur and Kl - Penang with Malaysian.
Since it cooperates with KLM, so we can earn points, and it has a very good reputation we decided to fly with them.
The problem started when I wanted to pay two tickets with my KLM creditcard at the Malaysian citydesk in Amsterdam. It was not possible, since they said my high priced ticket was to cheap. Only with the the expensive tickets it was possible!! I had to pay it in cash!!
I have never experienced this with KLM.
The modern beautifull B 777 was fully booked. I got a bulkseat because I had injured my foot, so that was ok. (At Schiphol the KLM arranged transportation to the gate so that was fine too.)
During the flight the service was reasonable, although it was without a smile, any friendliness or hospitality. The crew had to work very hard and the showed it clearly.
The aircraft was modern and we had a personal screen in the backseat in front of us.
The food was not very tasty.
(Perhaps the comparison with Singapore Airlines gave us this disappointing feeling, SQ is somehow the best)
Arriving in KL, there was no transportation from the gate. I had to stumble to the arrivinghall. There were too many people for the wheelingchairs. And there was no small car to pick us up.... My foot was hurting a lot, but they could not help me.
The flights to and from Penang were smooth, only the airport of Georgetown (Penang) is very, very old. With no airco and we had to wait very long for our luggage.
The ticket we bought allowed us to make changes. We had to go to the city office of Malaysia. They treated us very unfriendly and assured us that we had no luck in getting another flight, our ticket was too cheap, etc..
Finally we could convince the lady to put s on the waitinglist. We had to phone everyday again and again. There was no friendliness duringf this calls.
One day before we had to leave we were lucky!
On our way back home, Penang-KL-Amsterdam, the connection was smooth. However there was no transportation in KL available to the gate.
And during checking there were no seats next to eachother and no transportation to the gate available.
After a long conversation with the guy. and waiting fo quite a time, he gave us seats next to eachother and he promised me a bulkseat for my injured foot. However on both flights I was crammed between two seats. On our way back to Amsterdam I had a seat in the middle section of the plane and it was terrible. My foot became very painfull. The steward answered on my complaint the plane was fully booked and went away.
During the flight the people in front of us, lowered there seats in the backward position, and we could nearly breath....
I heard a lot of people yelling when becoming in the same situation. The steward could do nothing....
The personal screens did not function for the most of the passengers.
I have send a complaint to Malaysian but they did not respond ever.
I hope I do not have to fly them again. It makes flying a horrible experience.
