N.B.: These are thoughts from an Economy class passenger.
Being a quarter Filipino (person from the Philippines) and having travelled there on different flights throughout the last 5 years, I have to say that Philippine Airlines is the best airline I have had the pleasure of travelling on. I have used other airline services like British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Dragonair and United Airlines, but these are not as good an airline service as Philippine Airlines is. I have a few relatives who work for this airline, and I hope in this review, I do not come out sounding biased, so please bear with me.
You may think, what is special about this certain airline? In my opinion, there are great, even amazing compared to other flights.
One of these is food! Food on these flights are always exceptional compared to British Airways and Cathay Pacific. The food always comes piping hot. There is always a decent dessert and along with that, bread and water. You also get to choose a drink before you start and the stewardesses always make it a habit to ask passengers if they want refills for their drinks.
This leads onto my next point: service. The service on Philippine Airlines is always exceptional. The pilot is always extremely pleasant and the stewardesses are extremely friendly and are always smiling, no matter what they have to do. Whether it would be bringing food for the passengers, telling the passengers about the rules of safety on a plane or dragging a cart of Duty Free goods, this is all done with a smile, and without any hesitation. The crew's positive and cheerful attitudes make life during a flight a lot more comfortable and in my opinion, that's important for an airline service. So kudos to them.
The abundance of souvenirs is another thing I really like about this airline. Whenever you ride any Philippine airline flights, you can be guaranteed a souvenir, but most of the time, you are given a pack of cards. This might be good for people who like playing cards (like me) or bad for people who do not enjoy playing with cards. Other souvenirs are available, but I would highly recommend the pack of cards for a flight to the Philippines.
Being called Philippine Airlines, this is the only direct flight to the Philippines, which is beneficial for people like me who frequently go to Manila. Most flights go to Manila, but there are smaller planes which go to the outlying islands (these are known as domestic flights, and everything else is just as good there).
The price of these flights are also cheap compared to other flights. Although British Airways is cheaper than Philippine Airlines, I honestly think Philippine Airlines is the best airline to spend your money on (about HK$2000, or US$250). British Airways may be cheaper at HK$1900 (US$237.50), but it's service is not too good and it's food is pathetic, but that's another story.
However, like most good things, this has its problems.
Here in Hong Kong, Philippine Airlines flights are always full and at times, you can be bumped off a flight due to the numbers and hence, have to cancel your flight, which is extremely annoying.
There are also frequent delays. Quite often, there are problems with the engine or something along those lines and this causes passengers to wait up to 3 hours for the crew fix this problem. I also find this aggravating. But then again, safety always comes first!
Anyway, back to the list of problems. The last problem in my opinion, is the lack of entertainment. I've never watched any movies or listened to any kind of entertainment on any of these flights and this can cause flights to be a bit boring, and considering the fact I have heard stories of people watching movies like Shrek on their plane rides makes me jealous. As you can see, a major let down for this airline.
Nevertheless, I find Philippine Airlines a reliable airline service, and I think they deserve recognition for being one of the best airline services out there. I would recommend any person going to the Philippines to take this flight (if it's available). Anyway, I hope you guys found this helpful and I hope you guys enjoy it.
