I am of French nationality and live in the US. For the past 10 years, I have traveled between the US and France several times a year almost exclusively with Air France to build customer loyalty with them.
A few weeks ago, I learned early in the morning that my father had passed away, in France. I immediately called Air France and talked to someone who had no interest whatsoever in helping me get a flight as rapidly as possible. And forget bereavement fares, they just "don't do THAT". So much for compassion towards loyal customers. I had booked weeks earlier a regular trip departing just two days later, but the Air France representative quickly brushed away all my suggestions to leverage that ticket. Instead she passed me on to another department where I was kindly offered a same-day, one-way ticket for the mere charge of 4,500 euros!! In business, I believe they call that grazing on graves...
Not in a mood to be played, I hung up on Air France and dialed Delta Airlines. There, not only did the representative offer her condolences to me but she worked with me to get me on a same-day flight for a reasonable fare, and explained to me how to apply for a bereavement discount once my trip would be completed.
Times of crisis or grief are the times when customer relationships are done and undone. The rest is just marketing hype and false pretenses about caring for customers. Don't build loyalty with Air France. I had nearly 200,000 frequent flyer miles attesting to my loyalty to them and the one time I really needed them, they showed as much heart as a buzzard.
