| Kallisti's Full Review: Icelandair |
Iceland Air boasts some significant achievements in the history of aviation. I believe it is the oldest operating airline (with over 60 years of history) with the newest fleet of aircraft. They've added a brand new 757 to the fleet just a short time ago (March, 2001). The first trans-continental flight took off from Iceland. In a country where land-passage over hostile terrain is often impossible, flight is the required mode transportation.
I was able to ride on the new plane on one of it's debut commercial flights. A new plane makes a big difference in the flight! Kind of like the difference between an old and a new car. The ergonomics of the economy seating in the new craft is also vastly improved over the past few short years.
Iceland Air also features some of the best airfares I've ever seen anywhere. In January/Feburary they were offering a special two-for-one deal with round trip fares to Europe for $328.00. For two passengers! Of course this deal was quickly snapped-up by airfare bargain hunters. If you plan to take advantage of the special airfare offers, keep an eye on the web page and act fast! Just don't attempt to order the tickets online -- call the North American reservations desk at 1-800-223-5500, Monday through Friday from 8am to 7pm ET and Saturday 9am to 5pm ET. The receptionist will give you the cheapest available fare and won't waste your time by poking around and turning up unavailable itinerary dates the way the web page tends to do.
When ordering tickets over the phone remember that overnight mailing is an option available for additional postage fees. The telephone salesperson forgot offer this option to me. Then she said the tickets would arrive within ten days. They arrived in 12 days (through no fault of the Iceland airlines ticketing -- 10 days should have been plenty of time for the US postal service to deliver my mail!). I was due to leave to Europe on another airline in 11 days. Iceland Air resolved this situation to my satisfaction without much ado or difficulty and arranged for European ticketing at no extra charge to me. Thank you Iceland Air! Great job!
I heard some people complaining that there was a charge for alcoholic beverages on the flight. That's no problem in my opinion. I'd rather save 50 bucks in airfare and pay 4 bucks a piece for a couple of nippers of gin and cans of tonic directly on the flight!*
Highly recommended airline between the US east coast and many destinations in Europe.
