My wife and I first visited Jamaica on our honeymoon in 1990...stayed at Sandals Royal. We have returned six times since, and the last just turned us off of Jamaica completely....due to Air Jamaica.
After a nice vacation at Boscobel Beach (took the children this time) we arrived at the airport over two hours before the flight was due to depart. They had separate lines for couples and families at the check in counter (I figured out why later). After standing in the "family" line for over two hours, while the "couples" line moved pretty steadily, we were told that we would not be on that flight. Turned out that the flight was overbooked by over 20 seats!! Guess AJ did the math and figured it was cheaper to bump five families than ten couples....so bumped we were. We then had to wait in the hot airport, no offer of food or beverage, for another three hours before they grudgingly made a hotel arrangement and booked us on a flight for the following day.
They didn't offer any compensation, and when I raised that issue, they offered fifty dollar discount coupons off future airfare. They wouldn't pay for me to call the neighbor that was taking care of our pets to let them know that we would be delayed almost a full day getting back, so I had to call from Jamaica at my own expense to do that.
The room they put us in for the night didn't even have enough beds...two small beds for a family of five! When we finally got back home the next day, I wrote and called Air Jamaica and wrote to Butch Stewart, the CEO of Air Jamaica, and finally was offered a token cash settlement. Other than that, no apology, rude customer service people at the airport, and no reply to my letter to Butch Stewart.
With the recent rioting, the horrible crime rate, and the poor service of their "national" airline, Jamaica may well see their tourism industry take a nosedive. I know that we won't be back....I'm not willing to fly Air Jamaica ever again.
Caveat emptor!
