| Tokada's Full Review: BWIA West Indies Airways |
When I took a recent trip to Barbados with BWIA, or British West Indian Airlines, I was extremely surprised that BWIA was such a good airline. Before the flight I was a bit skeptical about the airline, but it came in a relatively cheap package deal, so I dealt with it. I guess my cheapness overpowered my fears. I am always a little uncomfortable with flying, but I was especially scared to fly on this airline that I have never heard of.
When I arrived at the terminal to check in my luggage and conform my ticket seating arrangements, I was a little scared that BWIA only had one ticket counter. I am not sure why I was scared, but for some reason I felt unsafe. As I proceeded to the boarding gate, I got more nervous and my fears only got more unrealistic. I was scared that the plane would crash, or there would be terrorists, or something ridiculous like that. These are all probably fears that stem from my prejudices of small time airlines. I tried to ignore these fears, so I just boarded the plane.
When I boarded my flight I was very surprised that the plane was so tiny. I was always used to these huge commercial airlines that can easily carry hundreds of people. I would be surprised if there were even a hundred people on my flight. Again I ignored this and I just headed to my seat. The seats were quite roomy for a coach seat. As long as you weren't 300 pounds, you had plenty of room. I needed this room for my next five hour trip to Barbados.
As soon as we were safely in the air, I began to relax. We were flying smoothly to Barbados and I was pretty excited. In fact, I actually began to enjoy myself. The crew was extremely kind and served all types of drinks. They even had a better selection that most commercial airlines, but there were some downsides.
They showed this pretty bad made for television movie. At least commercial airlines can show you movies that were in the theatre at one point or another. I was disappointed with the film, but as soon as the meal came I forgot all about it. I really hate airline foods and I usually cannot even eat them, but I could eat this meal. I didn't like it, but it is pretty amazing that I could even stomach it. They served this plastic chicken that was supposed to be tropical or something, but I have had a lot worst on a plane. They also had nice rolls and these really tasty chocolates that I liked.
The rest of the flight was enjoyable and I managed to sleep a little. We did have to make one stop, but it wasn't for too long and it was even nice to stretch your legs. We got back on the plane and we landed in Barbados early! I have never landed anywhere early. I was amazed. All my fears of this small time airline melted away, and I actually liked the flight. I recommend this airline to anyone who has a trip to the Caribbean coming up.
