"The world's best airline," "great service," "superb food", etc., were all positive attributes that I heard about Emirates Airlines when I booked my flights with them. The airline lived up to most of these praises to an extent. However, I was disappointed by their consistent over-booking of passengers on flights, which ultimately led to me being bumped from the flight.
As I was waiting at Heathrow, on transit from JFK, for my flight to UAE and subsequently East Africa, I was suddenly told that my booking could not be found! Stunned, I inquired further and after many complicated and tiring run-arounds, I was quietly informed by the assistant manager that the flight was overbooked and they could not accommodate me as well as 15 or so other frustrated passengers. Imagine my frustration and disappointment at this stupidity of overbooking flights, which has apparently been a deliberate strategy.
To their credit, however, following my obvious frustration and disappointment they managed to find me alternative bookings, via British Airways to Zurich and then Swissair to East Africa. Problem was, in the ensuing confusion, my luggage containing computer equipment worth $20,000, thankfully insured, did not accompany me on my journey. Fortunately, my bags did turn up about a week later, but the delays and hassles I had to endure were simply unacceptable.
The return trip, however, was much pleasant. I enjoyed the service a lot and the cabin crew was quite cheerful and helpful. The food was also great and the in-flight entertainment simply superb. The mini-television sets showing a variety of movies and comedies on every seat were a joy to a fidgety and uncomfortable flier like myself. Emirates also provided free visas and three-day hotel accommodations for passengers who wished to extend their transit stay in Dubai and I took advantage of this to enjoy three days of great bargain shopping, amid the oppressive summer heat.
All in all, Emirates Airlines can be a very enjoyable experience. Now only if they would curb the overbooking of passengers.
