A mediocre reputation that isn't deserved

Pros: Non-stop service to popular cities with a low price and a good frequent flier program
Cons: In my experience, none-- really!
The Bottom Line: I highly recommend America West for their lower prices and non-stop service.

I live in Phoenix (the hometown of America West) and I've been flying America West almost exclusively for any air travel. I'm quite familiar with America West's mediocre reputation locally, as well as the generally negative comments on Epinions, however over the past 2 years my experiences with them have all been good.
My main reason for flying with them has been the type of service they offer-- non-stop! Now, I know you can't get non-stop service to ANY city in the US with them, but if you live in Phoenix, it isn't hard.
Over the last year I've been flying to Mexico City to visit friends (yes, an international flight), and America West is the only airline that offers non-stop service from Phoenix to Mexico City. I've taken 7 round-trip flights to Mexico City and all of them have been great. The attendants each spoke fluent English and Spanish (a plus) and were always friendly. In fact, after so many trips, I began to recognize them by name (they have a small rotating crew that does this flight). The flights all arrived on-time (or just a few minutes late). I even took a few of these international trips in first class (they charged $50 to upgrade at the gate at the time) and really enjoyed doing so.
Each of those trips was purchased online (E-ticket) from the America West website. As a bonus, I even earned 500 bonus miles by purchasing online. They have a great website that allows you to search for the lowest fares if your travel dates are flexible. To top it off, the Mexico City fares were lower then any other airline, including flights that had multiple stops.
I've also flown America West to LAX and Las Vegas with similarly good experiences. As a matter of fact, I'm booked to fly with them to Las Vegas in one week.
In all honesty, the only bad experiences I've had has been with my fellow, post 9-11 travelers (no fault of America West).
I look forward to flying America West whenever I get the chance. If you fly out of Phoenix, it's almost a given that you'll be flying them eventually.
