I have flown on America West several times and it has become my favorite airline. That is partly because 75% of the flights out of Phoenix are AWA, but also because they are a joy to fly with.
The seats are comfortable and roomy. I have enough room to cross my legs and even 3 hours into a flight, I don't find myself shifting around trying to get myself comfortable. I have received nothing but smiles and great service from ticket agents, gate agents, and flight attendants.
Check-in is a breeze. They have "QIK Check-in" at their hubs in Phoenix, Vegas, and Columbus, and a few other cities. At the QIK kiosks, I can check myself in in a matter of minutes. All I have to do is tell the computer my name, tell it where I'm going, and answer a couple questions, and I can change my seat assignment if I so desire. The boarding pass is printed at the computer and I go direct to the gate. If I have bags to check, there is a bag-check counter for QIK check customers only.
I try to have carry-on only so that I don't have to wait for my bags after I land. In the 2-3 times that I have checked bags on AmericaWest, they made it to my destination on the same flight and in the same condition that I left them.
I have only had the pleasure of being in first class once and the food and service was great. Without asking, I would automatically get a new drink when my glass was half-full. The food was excellent. Flying in coach, the only meal service is two rounds of a snack pack and a can of pop.
On longer flights, they have an inflight movie. They show movies that were in the theaters a couple months earlier, or seasonal (e.g. Christmas) movies. The movie changes every 2 weeks and is different for East and West-bound flights. And, they have a choice of 10(?) music channels, something for every taste. The music channels change their lineup every month. You can pay $5 to rent headphones or bring your own from home.
Several times I have gotten great last-minute weekend deals to visit friends in the LA area. When I fly to Michigan to see family and friends, they are always the cheapest airline.
They only require 20,000 miles to earn a free round-trip flight, and when booking online you get 3000 bonus miles. So, after 5 trips from PHX-LAX, you'll get a free round-trip flight. Or, after 3 trips from PHX-Detroit and a few more bonus miles, you'll get a free round-trip flight.
I had to make an emergency trip to Michigan when a friend's Dad died last month. They graciously changed an itinerary that I had booked for September with flyer miles. They found me a seat on the flights I wanted with no charge for the change.
