I moved to Phoenix, AZ from NYC three years ago to attend graduate school, and have traveled between the two cities many times since then. I've flown this route using three other airlines, but none have been as good as America West (AW). Not only does AW have numerous direct, non-stop flights between Phoenix (Skyharbor Airport) and New York City (JFK, LaGuardia and Newark), but I find their customer service to be great, and I have not experienced any tremendously long and tiring delays. I have also flown America West to other cities (Columbus, OH and San Antonio, TX), and continue to be satisfied and impressed.
Okay, so they only offer a small "snack sack" with a sandwich, chips and fruit, but it's more than Southwest's peanuts. Northwest may have better food, but Northwest's hub cities are Detroit and Minneapolis-St. Paul...both of these cities often experience inclement weather conditions (thunderstorms and snowstorms) that produce great delays.
Another perk about America West is that its Frequent Flyer Fund has many partners (for example, Continental Airlines, British Airways, Sprint, etc.), as well as a Visa credit card that allows you to earn frequent flyer miles with every purchase you make. A free ticket requires 25,000 miles, but the miles add up quickly if you use AW's partners and/or credit card. Also, if you purchase an e-ticket from their secure website (www.americawest.com), you can earn an extra 1000 miles!
Their website is a great way of keeping informed about their frequent fare sales between major cities. If you want to do it the old-fashioned way and call the airline to buy tickets, always ask if there is any way to get a cheaper ticket. I've purchased tickets via phone, and have always had a good experience. However, not every phone agent will volunteer information about cheaper tickets. If you persist and they sound lazy, hang up and call again with the hope of getting a better agent. This is an inherent problem with EVERY airline, and I've actually had a lot of success with America West phone agents.
Overall, I wouldn't fly any other airline between AZ and NY. I can easily put up with America West's flaws in return for safe, non-stop flights.
