My first experience with America West, or "America Worst" as it was known by seemingly everyone at the airport, was also my last!
I booked a trip on America Worst from Dallas/Fort Worth to Tucson to see my sister after she had major surgery because to be honest they had the best deal. I soon found out how true the old adage "You get what you pay for" is. I should have known I was doomed from the start when the first flight which connected in El Paso was delayed for over an hour with no reason given by the airline. Then when we finally did board it was unbearably hot in the plane while we waited another 30 minutes for take off. Being six months pregnant I did not appreciate having to fan myself to keep from passing out and not even being offered some water. Then as if that wasn't uncomfortable enough, I was literely wedged in between two rather stout gentlemen who were sweating profusely and sticking to my arms. The flight from El Paso to Tucson was better but we spent 20 minutes circling the airport waiting to land.
Then the trip home was when the nightmare really began. My flight was scheduled to depart at 1:20pm on a Sunday afternoon and connect again in El Paso. I called a little over an hour before my flight was scheduled to depart to make sure it was on time and was told it was. I arrived at the airport 45 minutes early and waited with my still recovering sister. 15 minutes before we were to depart they announced the flight had been cancelled, again with no explanation why. There wasn't a cloud in the sky so I knew it could not be blamed on the weather. Then we were instructed to go back and wait in line to have other arrangements made to get us to our destinations.
There were already 25-30 people in line who showed up at the last minute and now were in front of all of us who had arrived early and had been waiting an hour already. Being six months pregnant it is hard for me to stand in one spot for very long and there I was standing in line for over 30 minutes again. I was booked on the next flight to El Paso which did not depart until 4:30 pm and I missed my connecting flight. In an attempt to make up for the inconvienence the airline upgraded me to first class and gave me a meal voucher so I could eat at the airport while I waited for the next flight. At first I thought first class, wow! But it was a joke. Other than having more leg room it was not one bit better than coach. I still got the same lousy little bag of snack mix and a beverage. When we arrived at the airport they re-directed us three times to different gates and the pilot himself joked that "They didn't know what the hell they were doing". I did not get home until well after midnight when I was supposed to have been there at 6pm. and I had to be to work at 8am.
Basically, even though I saved on the airfare it was not worth all the inconvienence and my time. I will NEVER fly this airline again. I do not care how much money I could save. It's just not worth it!
