American Airlines - Quite Possibly The Worst Airline In The US

I recently returned from a trip to Cancun, Mexico on American Airlines. My husband and I had a connecting flight through Miami to New York City. From the moment we arrived at the airport in Cancun we knew it was going to be a long trip home. We arrived over 2 hours early to a line that wrapped around the airport. American Airlines was the only airline with such huge lines at it's ticket counters. They had several flights going out to several cities leaving around the same time. We were asked what city we were going to and sent to probably the longest of all the lines. After over an hour of waiting I asked the same agent if we should be on a different line since our plane would be boarding soon, she moved us to another line. We waited another 40 minutes. I was afraid we would miss our plane so I grabbed another agent and explained our plane was leaving in 20 minutes and he moved us to the front of the line. When we reached the front of the line we realized why everything was moving so slow. There was 2 people checking everyone's bags by hand. I understand the need for security to be tight but more staff need to be hired to do this, otherwise American needs to invest in some x-ray equipment. We had a one hour lay over in Miami. One hour to go through immigration, then get our bags, then go through customs, and then go through security again. As soon as we got off the plane with asked an American Airline agent if they could help us get through customs and immigrations a little faster so we could catch our plane. We were rudely told there is nothing I can do, and sent away to the end of the line. When we got through immigration and picked up our bags we asked 2 separate American Airlines agents to call ahead and let someone know that we were in the airport and being delayed by the lines at customs, both told us I can't do anything for you. One actually told us we had plenty of time, even though we had 15 minutes until the plane started boarding, and we still had to go through customs and security checks. Luckily the customs agent let us go through pretty quickly and the security officers let us go to the front of the lines. But not one American Airline agent helped us out at all. Even on the plane the service was terrible. The flight attendants were too busy talking to each other to be polite. I know airline food is not the best but the breakfast we were served on the way to Mexico was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen. The movie screens were small and on our flight there the screen had static. This was the most horrible flying experience I've ever had. I've flown many smaller airlines and I would expect an airline as big and popular as American to be a lot better, but I was dead wrong. Do yourself a favor and pick another airline.
Just an extra note...the flight was smooth and we landed and took off fine if you can get past the terrible service by the agents in the airport and on the plane.
