I just recently took a vacation from Austin (AUS) to New York (JFK), for a wedding and a trip into the city. I was very excited to fly American again since all my trips with the airline have been excellent.
Departing from Austin Bergstrom airport is usually always easy and fast. American airlines has check-in lines for first class, and coach class, as well as several self-checkin machines. Checking in is very fast and easy, due to helpful and courteous employees. My mom unfortunately packed everything she owns for a quick weekend trip, so her luggage was overweight. The lady didn't charge us the extra $25.00, and let us off with a warning. We were very pleased, and walked away happy!
Boarding the MD-80 to Dallas-Fort Worth, was also quick and easy. We boarded by first class, then ascending group numbers. This seems to be a great way to board, and employees at the gate were polite and friendly. I'm sad to say I was let down by the flight attendants and overall service on this flight. With any airline you always have those flight attendants who just aren't the happiest people in the world. Well, we got those on this flight. They did give us drinks, and our pretzels, but nothing more. This was something I wasn't used to with American, and was a little disappointed. The interior for the MD-80 was very nice. Great legroom, great storage space, and their luxurious leather headrests. The first class is also quite nice, but the only down fall being no in-flight entertainment.
The rest of the flight was uneventful, except one hard right turn that forced your whole body downward, and was actually pretty scary. The pilot didn't really communicate, but just upon arrival.
DFW airport, very busy, but also very easy to find your way around. The employees at our gate were very nice and polite. Boarding was once again very quick and simple, and flight attendants were very welcoming! This plane was a 757, so their were T.V.'s and music selections in your armrests. The seats weren't as nice as the MD-80 because there isn't leather headrests, but were still fairly comfortable with good legroom.
On this flight we saw "National Treasure," and their were $3.00 snack boxes available for purchase. American used to have the "bistro" bags on these flights but now have a $3.00 snack box. I thought the snack box was worth paying for, and was actually very good. There was also $5.00 headsets for purchase for the in-flight entertainment. The flight attendants were awesome on this flight, and kept checking up on passengers throughout coach. They gave beverage service twice, and gave the can for sodas. The pilot communicated with passengers throughout the flight, and was actually pretty funny. Very good flight with amazing service. All of our baggage arrived with no frays or rips.
Returning . . .
Well, JFK airport is nasty . . . and under construction. My advice is to ask employees where you need to go. Checking in was extremely easy once again with self-checkin machines. The employee at check-in was very nice, and was very respectful to travelers, GO AA EMPLOYEES! Boarding was actually a pretty humorous experience, due to passengers standing in the aisles not allowing others to get to their seat. Flight Attendants tried to move this along with some humor, and started the flight off right with passengers laughing. Boarding, although slow due to people not moving, was still good. Once again this was a 757, and this time we saw, "Oceans Twelve." The seats once again weren't like the MD-80's, but they were still fairly comfortable. However my seat angle was broken :(, which for a three hour flight can get pretty uncomfortable. The $3.00 snack box was sold again, and the cans for soft drinks were still given. The Flight Attendants went the extra mile in supplying us with friendly service. For instance, one flight attendant noticed i didn't have any more ice, and brought me some without me even asking. Excellent. The pilots communicated to passengers throughout the flight about updated arrival time and so forth.
Our last leg home was very good. We flew on an MD-80, back to the luxurious leather headrests. Boarding was easy and fast, with no problems. This flight wasn't full, and only had a couple people seated in first class, I still wish I was one of them. The flight attendants gave beverages as well as pretzels. The flight was quick, smooth, clean, and comfortable. We landed in Austin a few minutes early with no complaints. The pilot welcomed us texans back home with a few jokes that once again made passengers laugh. Our luggage arrived all accounted for, with no frays or rips.
American Airlines has consistently showed me employees who go the extra mile for passengers, clean planes, comfortable seats, and positive attitudes. I'm happy to say, "I fly American!"
