Pros:- I made it to New York for my vacation
- The airplane didn't crash
Cons:- no snacks for short flights.
- bad customer service
- too many to list..
The Bottom Line: I would not recommend this airlines to anybody I care about. They lost my luggage, ruined a friend's vacation, and tried to blame me for their mistakes.
American Airlines is one of the worst airlines I've flown with.
My trip was to New York for the New Years. I had a layover in Dallas. We couldn't land because there was a storm (not their fault). The plane few in circles for about an hour and a half before we needed gas. The pilot decided to fly to Austin to get gas.
We arrive in Austin and we have to wait 1 1/2 hrs on the plane. They were refilling gas and getting paper work to land back in Dallas. We fly back to Dallas. There is still a storm (still not AA's fault). We finally are able to take off after hours of delay.
I arrive in LaGuardia International Airport in New York. It's now 12 midnight. I wait 2 hours at the baggage claim with no luck. Our flight contained 80% luggage from another flight. About half of the passengers on my flight didn't have their luggage. We even waited for the next flight to come in. There were about 5 people that received their luggage on the second flight. The baggage claim people said I could a file a report by phone. I decide to call instead of waiting in the long line. I was told I was suppose to make a claim within 4 hrs. I call, I reach an automated robot. After being redirected to an operator it hangs up on me. It's now 2:00 am in New York. I have 4 hours to make a claim. I'm on hold till 3 am before I give up. I eventually able to file a report the next day.
I spent new years in NY having to re-buy several things I packed.
The worst part was a friend that was supposed to be in NY for New Years got stuck in Austin and AA couldn't find her a flight to NY till days later. The result was 2 days spent in Austin, missing new years celebration, not being able to go to New York, and they lost her suitcase. A big waste of time, money, and a vacation.
Back to my suitcase. After 5 days in New York, they finally find my suitcase; the problem was that I was leaving New York. When I spoke to a live representative at the baggage claim, they told me that they were delivering my baggage to the hotel I was staying at. The rep called the delivery person and told them to stop the delivery. She asked them to bring the suitcase back to the airport. She told me that the suitcase would be sent to my house. I asked her if I could have a receipt. She said it will be okay.
In the baggage claim area of AA, there were over 200 suitcases and boxes lying around. There were no people, which means it was all delayed luggage.
On my flight back to San Jose, I get on the plane. I end up sitting in the plane for 1 hour because the STA x-ray machine was broken and they still needed to scan some suitcases.
Oh yeah, none of my flights had snacks. Not even peanuts!!! The only snacks available were for a $5 purchase. On the flight back they even announced that they had limited supply of snacks. Towards the end of my flight the pilot made an announcement/advertisement for Citibank. How to save money, blah blah... use citibank..
1 week later, I'm now back in San Jose. I call the baggage claim operator (more talking to automated robots). This is the 4th time that I have called. The operator tells me they have no record of it being returned to the airport. They said they delivered it to the Hotel. They try to pin the blame on me asking if I told the hotel not to accept any packages. The operator gave me attitude. This set me off. I specifically told them not to send my luggage to the hotel. The operator even saw that on the report. They try calling the airport and put me on hold for half an hour. Then then the rep asked me if I would like to call back later since the airport wasn't picking up their phone.
I still haven't received my suitcase.
