I travel extensively internationally in my business. Although there
are other more traveled "road warriors" my travels approximate
50 -60 k miles per year with an occasional year approaching 100 k miles.
Believe me when I say "I've seen it all" when referring to experiences
on the airlines. I have seen all sorts of behavior and I can truly say
that not all of the flying public is civilized, reasonable or even sane.
I have seen people literally dripping wet coming from the nearest
beach boarding the aircraft, smelling of suntan oil, salt water and long dead, moldering fish. I have seen so called civilized people board
wearing wrinkled clothes smelling like their last bath was 2 or more
nights ago, blood shot eyes, hair matted and breath that could kill
Lucifer himself. Talk about pollution - - -
Of course 1/2 of this rant is about attire on the airlines.
I know the airlines are hamstrung on this issue given the American
passion for freedom of everything including debasing one's self and
affecting those around them. Is it freedom of or freedom from -
freedom from responsibility, freedom from decency, freedom from duty.
Do we have the freedom to not be democratic, to not be civilized, to
regress to what ever level we desire? Plato, where are you?
Is there anything wrong with having standards? I have even seen
people come to weddings and funerals wearing jeans, shorts, etc.
I know that enforcing a dress standard by the airlines or some other
entity will be seen as arbitrary and someone somewhere will sue
claiming "grievous injury" but it would be great if we could have some
standard of dress. I'm tired of the great unwashed.
Now for the OTHER HALF. Of course I'm speaking of those that think
that since they bought A ticket they have the right to park untold sizes
and numbers of packets, bags, bundles and various waddings of indescribable items anywhere and everywhere on the plane in the luggage overheads, under seats and cloak closets.
I have even had some of these people try to remove my ONE carry on from the luggage overhead above my seat. Again, the great unwashed, the
rabble, the uncivilized encroach upon the rest of us.
However, something can be done about this idiocy. The airlines can
if they have the will enforce carry-on number and size. I for one am
looking forward to that day. Because only the law and rules can protect
the civilized from those dregs that continue to ignore courtesy and
respect for others. That's why we have to have so many laws - because
we have so many of the uncivilized so willing to pervert the normal
concourse of human decency and civilized customs that took so many thousands of years to grow and nurture. We can ill afford to allow this
even on this minor point. All does not have to tend towards chaos.
