| gale's Full Review: American Airlines |
This review is based strictly on my latest experience with American Airlines. Years ago I had good experiences with them, but this last one was a real bust. I received an AmericanAdvantage mastercard from Citicorp, one with a fee (which is okay if it is worth it). One of the perks for accepting this card and paying the fee was one free round trip ticket on American Airlines when accompanied by one paid ticket in the amount of $340 or more. Before I called them to take advantage of this, I looked up the schedule and fees for the trip I wanted (over 60 days away). I saw there were plenty of seats available and the fare was $362.00. So I called a ticketing agent, fully expecting to take advantage of this great deal (pay $362 for mine and receive my companion's free with my certificate). The ticketing agent said the cheapest seat available using that coupon was $480! I asked to speak with a supervisor, who also told me the same thing. She said the cheapest rate could not be used with the free coupon. So, this does not make the accompanied flight free at all - just reduced in price if I have to pay $480 for the 2 tickets instead of $362. I told them this was false advertising and they told me that is the way it is - take it or leave it. I will be leaving their program as soon as I have accumulated enough miles with my credit card for a trip.
